    adware

not a bad article to tell friends/clients to check out

    Invasion of the Computer Snatchers
Hackers are hijacking thousands of PCs to spy on users, shake down online businesses, steal identities and send millions of pieces of spam. If you think your computer is safe, think again

Ignorance is bliss...heh..whoever coined that phrase should be banned in this day and age.
Out of all the protection software out there, a firewall..antivirus..adaware etc..I've found common sense is your best defence against any wouldbe hacker. 2nd is a very nice program called MRUBLASTER. This wipes all passwords, cookies, URL's etc from you pc leaving 1 less avenue of attack.http://www.wilders.org

Well...I use Firefox, Norton Anti-virus, Ad-Aware, and Spybot S&D. I don't allow the browser to remember passwords. I keep cookies to a minimum. I also wear condoms on the two fingers I type with.

I agree with Mustang though. Common sense is your best defense. Too bad common sense isn't so common anymore.

I also have a pretty good program that goes through the registry and checks for a number of things. Allows me to delete certain things from the registry.

        Re: adware

I use K-Meleon, McAfee suite, and Spybot S&D. I'll prob ditch McAfee for Avast and Kerio, and add Ad-aware SE. The school's boxes are running FF or K-Meleon, and no antivirus or firewall (we have a HW firewall). A few boxes have Spybot S&D or Ad-aware, tho.

Some software I need requires Windoze, like Anders Isaksson's BlockCAD. web.telia.com/~u16122508/proglego.htm Also, students at my school despise linux. Why? I have no idea.

I thought it should work in Wine but I've just tried it and it does not work properly. Maybe it's because of old Wine version I have...

                Re: adware

If you want to remove spyware and the like, I wrote a good walkthrough on how to do it effectively here:

On my machine though, I no longer use anti-spyware software, and really the only piece of security software on my machine itself is NOD32 from www.eset.com I've been doing computer repair for years and I haven't found a better anti-virus program than this one.

The real guards? A linksys router properly configured will kill off your daily Internet hits from machines looking for open ports. And the most important of all... not using an administrator account! I can't stress this one enough... everything that gets installed on your machine is installed because your login name has admin priveleges. Learn how to create and use two user accounts in Windows!

                  Re: adware

I agree that a router with firewall is a great first step that prevents the computer from being visible to the Internet. If I bypass the router so that the computer is directly connected to the Internet there is a network attack within 20 minutes.

So in addition to that I use the standard Windows SP2 firewall, Kaspersky AV Personal that has consistently outperformed Norton in protection capability and now MS Windows Defender beta 2. The latter has few oddities but it is better than beta 1 that generated piles of temp files, no longer with beta 2.

Some users tell me that they do not open attachments that are suspect. The Kaspersky experience is that if an attachment is loaded with a malware the e-mail will be tagged with "message disinfected" and it is not possible to open the attachment.

remember to go to setup and uncheck pctools spyware doctor as it wont remove anything for free anymore.
also in the settings look for accept license agreements and set it too.
then you just sit back and watch.

Operating frequency for motherboard common mode inductor/filter
                                          by J_T
I have a question - I have replaced the PSU on my own iMac Pro. However, when removing the motherboard I knocked of a 120 OHM 30% 0.3A small surface mount common mode inductor/filter (~0602 size) in the ethernet circuit near the female RJ45 port.

The closest match I can find on Mouser is 120 OHM common mode inductor at 100MHz - my question is this frequency correct for a motherboard? The schematic for the motherboard only provides '120 OHM 30% 0.3A' and the TDK part number does not return anything in google.

Sorry, I am not experienced hence a basic question.

I have faulty HP ProBook 450-G2 LA-B181P - doesnot start. When connecting a charger, the LED on plug in connector blinks from yellow to blue. (I tried to search a short on mainboard.)
What is a common resistance ( to ground ) I should measure on a coil that leads to VGA chip(RT8880CGQW) ? I measure only about 9.6 Ohms. Is it normal?

I've got a control display for a Carrier chiller that I'm trying to understand what the common failure with these boards are. This is the board in question https://www.supplyhouse.com/Carrier-...arquee-Display all of them seem to develop a failure with the up and down arrow buttons on the right side of the display, the esc and enter keys I've never seen fail. Once these boards are plugged in they run 24/7, you used to have to press extremely hard with the end of the blunt screwdriver and you could still get the arrows to work but now it has completely stopped working. The button...

Is it common for these caps to go bad?

Just wondering how common it is for these types of caps to go bad. I have a couple that are measuring approximately correct (997nF) however a couple of them show signs that they have been pretty warm at some point. I'm replacing them anyway but just wanted to know how common it is for these to maybe act up when hot....
