Re: Big Heatsinks
Here's a few more things to consider in order to drop temps a bit. Lap the mating surfaces of the cpu and the heatsink. They're not very flat (in most cases) from the factory and can net you at least a few deg C in temperature drop. It's also very important to use a minimum of thermal compound when both surfaces are flat and smooth. I go from 400 to 1500 grit wet or dry automotive sandpaper lapping wet with a bit of detergent. It really helps a lot. Also, moving cables and wiring out of the way really helps airflow and decreases turbulence.

MSI RD480 Neo2 bad caps
This board ran fine for over a year with an Opty 144. I decided to upgrade to a dual core opty 170 for folding work and immediately experienced blue screen crashes. The Stock CPU cooler was warm, Northbridge heat sink however was very hot. Visual inspection of the caps showed 7 UC KZG 6.5v 1000uF located near the north bridge to have a very very slight bulge. There's other UC caps of the same rating on the board but these look ok. I replaced the "bad" caps with Panny FM 10v 1200uF and it's folding now. Should I replace the rest of the UC caps? There's 1 behind the USB port, a few...

Re: Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop "fixes"
Linuxguru, you are absolutely correctThe 2 processors I tested were both P4M's. Thanks for the clarification. It would be nice to be able to mod a Dell BIOS but that's way beyond my capability. I think the Northwood is the easiest solution in this particular case. One point of note on battery life, when the laptop sorta ran with the prescott, battery life was about an hour (according to the meter). Now with the Northwood it's 1 hour 50 mins. I think that shows the difference in power consumption as well as a possible reason...

Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop "fixes"
I recently purchased one of these refurbished by Dell from a reseller. It was cheap, has great specs but also some serious issues ( battery catching fire or components running extremely hot ).
These laptops were marketed towards the business and also the gaming community. Therefore they used Intel's latest and greatest ( at the time )P4 Prescott processors. This one came with a 2.8ghz/1meg L2 cache/ 800mhz fsb # SL79k processor. The motherboard uses the Intel 865 chipset. This is all well and good as a desktop pc but a laptop? Serious heat issues here!
After using...

Germany arrests 3 over alleged bomb plots
(How timely, now the authorities have the amunition they need to force into law)
Bob Ayres, a former U.S. intelligence officer who is an analyst at Chatham House, a London think tank, said the radical ideology embraced by Islamic militants outweighs national loyalty, noting that many of those arrested in alleged European terror plots in recent years grew up here.
“They're not Germans, Brits or French. They are radical Muslims living in these countries,” he said.

I agree. What good is a warranty if a bad PSU takes out other hardware as well?...

Re: Wanted: Internal pictures & capacitor list in Seasonic S12+ 650W PSU
I have an SS-500HT (purchased about 6 weeks ago) which I would be glad to open up and check. Nothing larger than that though. From past experience, the 300 watt unit had OST's. The 380 and 430 watt units have United Chemicon KZE's.Last edited by Mustang; 11-14-2006, 10:25 PM.

Re: Need help on emachines 1840 Plz
Please check your power supply or you may have more troubles brewing down the road. A cheap or over taxed power supply can kill your new motherboard in short order. Since your warrantee has been voided, there's no harm opening that power supply up (after caps are discharged) and checking for bloated and/or cheap caps.

A Hotflash! That can be very dangerous but I'm glad to see it worked for youHere's a link to the AU31 Manual
There's a FSB jumper you need to switch. Diagram is on page 7.Re: Emachines T3256

Re: Emachines T3256
I think your best bet at this point is a reflash using your floppy drive. Grab the proper bios from the emachines website as well as the right version of awdflash. You'll need to make a boot disk with awdflash.exe and the bios.bin file. Obviously using another pc. Before the reflash, disconnect power from the pc and clear the cmos. Flash the bios, shut down the pc and clear the cmos again. When it reboots you should be able to get in the bios setup. Please run just 1 stick of ram and not the mismatched set before attempting any of this....

Re: Loud (coil) noise from an MSI nforce2 board. Bad caps??
My kid's pc has the same MB but a version 1.X (can't read the rev. there's too much crap in front). It has a very large passive NB cooler and heatsinks on the mosfets. It wouldn't run stable much past 180fsb so I put an 80mm fan over the NB and mosfets and I got a stable 192fsb x 11 multiplier on his 2500XP-M. It's only a 2 phase VRM and I think the caps (although good brand) are light on capacity. Heatsink the mosfets and go with a slightly higher rated cap. It should run a lot more stable...

Re: Emachines T3256
Interesting those CPU's are worth more than when purchased new. What's the value of a 2500XP-M these days? I wouldn't mind selling one of those if I can offset the cost of an upgrade.

Anion idea has merit 99% of pc user is asthmatic headache person. Peltier cooler idea is upgrade benefit to preheat anion to multiply beneficial effect. All ALu component are anodize for our commitment to antioxidant in environment.
Sorry, but after reading their marketing strategy, I just had to do that.Last edited by Mustang; 06-28-2006, 11:23 PM.
