What most computer magazines don't say about power supplies...

In PC User March 2006 (Australia), there were reviews of 500W+ power supplies. Unfortunately, as with most other computer magazines, they did not have any mention of the internals, heatsinking, and most importantly of all, the ratings of the electrolytic capacitors.

    The units included:
    HEC AcePower 580W
    Cooler Master Real Power 550W
Thermaltake PurePower 680W (this is one which warrants a mention of the internals, heatsinking and capacitors).
    Antec NeoHE 500
    Thermaltake PurePower Power Station 520W

If anyone has any pictures of the internals (with capacitor ratings if possible), please post them in "Power supply build quality pictorial".
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

I've gone off most Aus computer mags. Most are heavily 'dumbed' down or consist largely of paid advertisements (see APC).
I'm only buying Silicon Chip these days, but even they have been a bit lax in covering the badcaps issues since the first article over a year ago.

Vintage AT Power Supplies - Selecting Capacitors
      by iMic
      Hi,

Back after a long hiatus with some old power supplies that need repairing. I've recently picked up a couple of 386SX systems, two 486DX systems, a SiliconGraphics Indy and an iMac G3 that either have verified leaking capacitors in their power supplies, or are likely to in the near future. For the sake of simplicity, instead of tackling all at once, I'm starting with the 386's and one of the 486's.

The 386's power supplies are Seasonic SS4040A's, with caps that are visibly leaking, and 9 replacement caps per unit are required. Most appear to be from the Rubycon...

Can LED panels be used from different TV's ( or the internals to the panel )?
      by NolesFan
I have a TV, ( example ) Sony XBR-75X80G that the LED panel is cracked, does anyone know if we can take the LED panel from a ( example ) Sony XBR-75X80H and plug it in and it will work? Or if the panel measurements is not exact, can we take the internals of the cracked panel 80G TV and mount into the good panel 80H TV? Thank you

      HP Docking Stations Power Supplies...?
      by SolomonMan
      All,
I recently purchased for a colleague and myself two used HP Docking Stations. They are for home use and are exact model as the ones we use at work for our laptops. We are both Software Developers.

Anyways these docks are HP Model 5TW10UT#ABA.

Unfortunately they did not come with there Power supplies (PSU) and I got them reasonable from eBay.

I purchased 2 new from Amazon After Market Power Supplies(PSU). Same Voltage and Same Amperage and in fact it mentions on the Amazon page they are supported for these docks as well.

Variac Transformers and switch mode power supplies.
      by angelos
      Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone in the forum can tell me how they use the variac transformer to check a switch mode power supply that they had just repaired.
I wanted to know how they adjust the votlage, do they start from zero and turn it up slowly or rather switch on that about 60V ac ( My country we use 220V ac) and hope for the best.
Also what sounds the PSU should make, what sounds wrong etc. Also if i have a scope what can i check for.
The reason why i am asking is i have a Sony LED TV PSU whose PFC circuit shorted out and upon closer inspection a...
