      Re: Factory Tours

its probably more impressive than you think.

i spent a few hours reading tours like that. what i noted was lots of women working in the factories. apparently women are also used exclusively for quality control because they are better at concentrating? they are also cheaper. Some of the factories have dormitories as well so people come to work like hell for long periods sleeping there and then periodically return to their villages. interesting to see that labour is used more intensively rather than machines where possible because it is cheaper and faster/cheaper to retrain for different product runs.

the factories are quite impressive. i liked also the machines which make automatic visual checks of the soldering etc.

regarding capacitors though, they make burn in tests of the products and periodically take samples for more extensive testing. sadly, even the most crappy capacitor can probably pass a 24 hour burn in.

i remember some pics of the inside of a chungwha crt plant.
dirty floors and chickens running about.
cleanliness is critical with a crt.
seems samsung is the king of crap crt's.

its funny that...i consider samsung to be the king of TFTs. although we get them made in Slovakia. The king of CRTs must be either Shamrock or Pine. die old crt dammit die........

            Re: Factory Tours

I like CRT more - but only the better ones (I have ADI and Iiyama). I really hate craps like AOC, Relisys and Belinea. A 15" monitor from these crap brands often can do max. 1024x768@60Hz which is unusable. I use 1024x768@85Hz on my ADI 15"... I've fixed an older (about 1995) "no-name" 15" monitor (branded TEH GmbH, JEAN on PCBs) and it worked fine at 1024x768@75Hz...

when i say crt i mean the tube itself.
samsung often uses other mfr's tubes in their own branded units.
oem units like dell, gateway, ect get the crap samsung tubes.
i think samsung is tied with zenith when it comes to crap tubes.

I have Dell 21" with Sony FD Trinitron tube, does 1600x1200 at 85Hz but I use 1280x1024 at 85Hz.

LOL. I just was wondering, because in Ireland, you even have a woman for a president. I have yet to see that in USA!

In fact, I have read about the fact that women had priority over men in Celtic societies.

                            Re: Factory Tours

I found a couple quotes in the ABit article interesting:
"At Rolly, we noticed that if a motherboard failed, it was immediately retested. Occasionally, these boards would fail continually, but after several tries, the components would usually pass inspection. Abit representatives explained to us that this procedure was because Rolly purposely sets inspection tolerances too tight and compensates for the extra manpower to test and retest (and retest again) by relying on its relatively cheap workforce."
I'm not sure I understand why they waste time testing at overly tight tolerances, unless they intend to sell some of the boards as "Ultra High-Test" models for more money. As far as I know they don't do that. Maybe it's just useful to have that extra detail when they trace back a QC problem.

"Abit's total volume is much less than that of ECS, but at the same time, quality control seemed much higher and more deliberate."
This is what bothers me about ABit now having their boards made by ECS. It's like having Ferraris manufactured by Ford. ABit is a smaller, enthusiast oriented brand and so their production requirements are different from a mass volume manufacturer like ECS.

well dont believe everything they tell the journalists. anyway that statement sounds odd. its true about the manpower though. for 100 bucks or so a month it would be difficult to get a machine to work for that money....

lol if ferraris were manufactured by ford they would be more reliable.....anyway abit had bad financials what could they do....

edit : thinking about it more, are abit boards made in USI factories now, since the merger?
