Re: blown caps on 9600 gso

I actually live in northern Minnesota about 10 miles from Canada. There is a place called Digikey that is about 50 miles from my location that has alot of different electrical components. I searched my bad caps on there website and came up with no results. I was wondering if you had the specifications of the caps that are on this board. I have the voltage and I know is that they are radial cans for through hole mounting. I just need capacitance, the width in diameter, and the lead spacing. Then I should be able to order these and replace them on my card. Thank you for your help

Also would an overheated computer cause these caps to burst?

Re: blown caps on 9600 gso

If the capacitors were with FZ on them, no... these particular capacitors are simply of bad quality, poor substances inside them cause them to almost always fail after some time.

Generally, heat affects the life of capacitors but good capacitors will stay within specifications for years as long as they're subjected to average temperatures (30-60c).

        Digikey is great store.

As you have the card in front, you should be able to measure the diameter of the capacitors with a ruler - you can put any diameter there as long as there's room for it. Look at the board, there should be a circle where the capacitor should be placed.

The lead spacing is the same... it's just the number of mm between the holes on the board - you can turn the card on the other side and just measure the distance between the solder points of the capacitor wires. Generally, the distance is standard for capacitors with the same diameter so whatever uF or voltage value the capacitors have, the lead spacing is the same for that diameter. For 8mm diameter, the spacing is usually 3.5mm while for 10mm diameter, the spacing is usually 5mm - the capacitors in the links below follow this "rule".

If you can't find capacitors with voltage identical to the one listed on your capacitors you can pick capacitors with higher voltage ... just the uF value should stay the same.

The post above says these are the caps:

        3 x fz85 1500 6.3v
        1 x fz83 1000 6.3v
        4 x fz86 470 16v

You never said what capacitors are on YOUR video card - we can't guess or say they're 100% what the other guy had. Look at your video card and read what's written on them.

On digikey, these would be good replacements for the capacitors mentioned above , from best to less

          Thank you very much. My caps that burst are;

          FZ87 1500 6.3v x 3
          FZ83 1000 6.3v x 1
          FZ86 470 16v x 2

Ok, the 1000uF and 470uF capacitors are the same as the ones above. FZ87 is a different series than FZ85, but it shouldn't matter - all the capacitors I linked to should have better or equal characteristics.

Just determine the lead spacing and the diameter and pick whatever's is more convenient for you from the links I posted.
What I'm trying to say is all are good but the best that would work may cost 1$ per piece while the second best costs 0.5$ when bought in pack of 5 so as you have to buy 3 pieces, it may be a better and cheaper choice to get the second best.

As long as this solves my issues with the computer crashing then price isnt really an issue. I just didnt have the budget to buy a new card. Im currently doing research on a new case and a very good cooling system. Thats why I asked if the temperature inside the case made these burst. Thank you for your help and responding quickly.

Re: blown caps on 9600 gso

Crashing could also be caused by poor quality electricity coming from the power supply.

For example, the capacitors inside the power supply could be turning bad due to the high heat inside it and because everything is crowded inside, so they no longer filter and regulate the power sent to the computer properly.

When this happens, the capacitors on the motherboard and the video card are forced to do extra work and may be subjected to higher ripple than what they're designed to support. If the ripple coming from the power supply exceeds what the capacitors tolerate, they may go bad prematurely.

So I would also check the power supply, inspect the capacitors, see what brands are inside and how they look - ideally, if the power supply has some age on top of less reliable brands of capacitors, I'd desolder a couple of capacitors and test them.

Crashes can be caused by ageing/dying capacitors near the cpu socket, which regulate the power the CPU receives, so check those capacitors as well.

Read what those capacitors have on label and type it here - there are some series of capacitors from some brands which had manufacturing flaws so those series have higher rate of failure. In this case, you should replace those as well.

So replace those capacitors anyway, you have to - but if you still have crashes, inspect the power supply and the motherboard.

I checked everything that I could see without having to tear the system down. Now that I just have the one GPU running, the system runs fine with no crashes, besides the video isnt running as smooth without the extra memory that it was relying on from the other GPU. I might order my new case this week and when I move my components to the new case I will check everything thoroughly. My PSU is an Ultra LSP750 750-Watt which is SLI ready. I built this system December 2008 and it runs nearly everyday all day. When I get the new caps and install them I will let you know how it is running.

I got my new caps yesterday and installed them. The card runs good now with no crashes. I ran a few different games and programs that usually would have caused the system to crash. Thank you again for your help

                              Greetings friends.

I was given this nice little laptop and would like to revive it if possible but i'm stuck identifying blown components. I'm very new to the repair game so i'm proceeding very cautiously.

I don't know the history of this laptop and the donator didn't elaborate what happened but it seems some moisture got into the USB C charge port and the result was what looks like some blown caps. The tell is some gunk inside the USB C port and corrosion on the outside as well as what looks like corrosion around the blown components.

                              Any guidance...

                              Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."
                              ...

                              Hey
I got a short on 3 pins of the PCI-E gold connector for 12V.
I see a few caps near the top right (near main power connector) that look blown, one is showing a short across it to GND.

Unforunately I don't have a schematic or board view for it (EVGA GTX 1070 FTW 8GB).

Due to the large number of caps there, I think it may just be decoupling.

Any ideas on figuring out the cap values? There also isn't any reference numbers for the caps on the silkscreen.

I've been seeing a lot of cheap-looking (but not always so cheap) no-name AGP video cards on eBay for a while. They started popping up quite a bit when the market for AGP cards became more alive all of a sudden due to interest in “retro” PCs. One thing that struck me about these cheapo cards is that they almost always seem to come with garbage caps - including the abominable Sacon FZ. That aside, though, I've been wondering about the rest of the quality (or lack of?) on these cards. So I decided to satisfy my curiosity yet again.

This one was actually suggested to me by ChaosLegionnaire....
