    Capacitor replacement values

Tried looking on the net and in the FAQ dept but I didn't really find the answer I was looking for.

I have an oddball motherboard AD70 Rev.A, socket 462 supports AMD Athlon chip, the board boots and doesn't shut off so it's a good candidate for repair as it has a few obviously blown caps.

The caps in question are by G Luxon 6.3 Volts 2700 uf. Can I replace these with a slightly higher voltage or a slightly higher uf reading?

I'm a little rusty in the theory dept...

You can replace them with slightly higher voltage ratings yes. The circuit will only provide the voltage to them - whatever it may be - the voltage rating on the cap is just the max voltage it can handle. Just don't want to go crazy with it, like putting a 50V cap in there or something as that could cause problems But if you stepped up to say 10V caps that would be fine.

I'm guessing from the capacitance rating that they are the VRM caps. You could probably go to 3300uF caps too, I've done that before when not having an exact replacement.

Okay thanks! I will take another stab at it tomorrow

The voltage written on a cap is it's limit, not actual the voltage of the circuit.
        -
ON MOTHERBOARDS the voltages are 12v, 5v, and 3.3v.
        - It's not unusual for 6.3v and 10v caps to be used interchangeably even from the manufacturer.

Going from 2700 to 3300 is fine in general BUT:
... going up in uF won't help anything if you down in ESR when you do it.

I have an AD70 SR (PATA raid) that had blown Teapos.

I don't use it any more, but it worked fine with 3300uf.
