Re: identify this peice and whats wrong with this picture?
The things in the boxes are inductors. The boards are designed for both agp/pci. You have one of each. They are going to be a little different because of power coming from the bus.
Re: identify this peice and whats wrong with this picture?
Field Effect Transistor-FET. Most people call to- packaged transistors fets, because they are commonly the ones in that shape. Why would you want to solder on an inductor?
Re: identify this peice and whats wrong with this picture?
AHA! Losts of power is needed to solder big wire inductors on a multi layer board. You will also need to get an inductor with the same inductance. I have schematics for a home made inductance meter - I'll see if I can find the book.
EDIT: I just noticed that you just noticed I also live in OHIO. LOL!
Re: identify this peice and whats wrong with this picture?
HAHA awesome!
anyways, i have a 60w soldering station that goes up to 480c, will that be good enough or will i need it to be hotter? also, is .8mm coil good for the job? 60/40?
Re: identify this peice and whats wrong with this picture?
wow you live in ownage. i have never been there ??????
post some close up pics of the boards. maybe we can see whats going on. you are on the wrong track with regards to missing components i believe. do they look like they have been removed or is everything looking clean?
btw, yes that one card is actually cut off... that was NOT me.
yea just about, cept their not dead, well idn yet i receive them tomorrow or so, so ill have extremely detailed pix by then, for now i hope these will do. i can fix most problems cept soldering but now with your guys help i can
Re: identify this peice and whats wrong with this picture?
i wonder if the red tape is just identifying the board as non functional, possible from a fried part or corrupt bios, which i can fix but if the board is friend guess the only thing i can do is steal some good caps off the board and thats it.
Re: identify this peice and whats wrong with this picture?
You can also steal the fans and inductors off dead boards.
Odds are in most causes its the main chip which is damaged which should mean other components are still functional, ie mosfets, resistors etc.
I got an ATI 9800XT for $15, all that was wrong with it was a dead DVI port, and a short between the heatsink and a SMD cap. It also needed new thermal paste.

Man that was quite a bit of work you went through to get that video card working! Hmm dead DVI port is not that nice. However for $15 I guess the work was justified and worth it.
