    Are these caps bad

Hi i have some problem with my computer. When i use two or more memory sticks the computer crasches with a bsod, if i go back to using a single stick it works like a charm. I tought it might be some bad caps, but im not sure if those are bad or not.

Dont look too bad - a picture across the top may show better. Do they feel domed.
Are ther caps at each end of the sockets?
    Are the sticks matched
Does it make any difference which stick you use.
Does it make any difference which slot you use.

Is this just a new problem have you changed anything.

Replace those caps. They are OST.
"We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! We gave them technology, the latest, the kind even Vietnam didn't have. They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

I had the problem for a long time but it worked fine with one 2gb stick. So i never bother to fix it. But today i did a clean install of a 64bit OS so i tought it was time to add some more memory, but it didnt work this time either so i can rule out software problems.
The sticks is bought as a kit (2+2gb) so i guess they should be matched. Both sticks works without any problems when i run memtest, but if i have 2sticks memtest freezes after a while.
        What does "OST" stand for?

The caps i posted earlier did'nt bulge abit, but i found atleast one bulging cap near the north bridge, the one just over that is slightly domed too, but not as bad.

I also post a overview image to show the placement of the caps.

test ram one stick at a time with memtest.
as stated above those caps are best replaced as they have a poor record.

In your first picture, three of the caps look odd, and one looks like it might be tilted (possibly intenal pressure has partly unseated the can from its rubber bung). In your second group of pictures, the third picture has two caps that look a bit swollen.

                what a difference pictures make.
the 2 near the northbridge are likely the problem.

Just get yourself some Nichicon HNs, replace all of the OSTs, and be done with it. They will fail sooner or later, whether or no they show it.

Thanks for the help guys. kc8adc i have memtested the sticks one at a time earlier, none of them showed any errors.

From what i could read without taking my caps out they are, OST RLA, 680uF 4v..
The place i would buy from don't have Nichicon NH, http://tinyurl.com/a2mns2k (ELFA Distrelec) But they did have these Rubycon ZL in 16v https://cdn.badcaps-static.com/pdfs/...d3dded1822.pdf Would they work? If you want you could take a look in their shop and suggest other caps too.

                      Re: Are these caps bad

If the computer just started doing that, even after a different power supplied was tried, I'd bet on those capacitors because my last 4-5 failed motherboards had bad OST brand capacitors near their DIMM sockets.

OTOH most retail memory modules are made with rejected or overclocked chips, a fact hidden by useless heatsinks. For example, many companies make DDR3 1600-2133 MHz modules with Hynix or Samsung H9 speed chips, which are rated 1333 MHz. The only sure way to avoid such chips is by choosing either Samsung or no-heatsink Crucial modules.

the 4v ones can be replaced with sanyo sepc 560@4v.they look alike but different values.the 2 near the sb are likely 4v and the polys will have the best results there.those are on the supply for the nb .
some of those caps are 6.3v so watch it! https://www.badcaps.net/store/produc...products_id=79

Yup. If I'd known they were 680uF, then I would have said the same thing (and no, ruby ZL aren't an appropriate replacement for OST RLA)

I did have a quick look at that supplier, and it looks like they don't have anything that would be suitable. Forget using them, and go with https://www.badcaps.net/store/produc...products_id=79, like kc8 suggested. Topcat's overseas shipping isn't all that expensive.

So i only have to replace then OST electrolytics, the polys around the cpu should be ok? And should i replace all of the 4v ones with the one kc8adu suggested? Which would be those at the NB and the ones up at the memory slots.

If they are all 680uF 4V, then yes, replace them all with the ones kc8 suggested. The polies around the CPU should be fine, but pull the heat sink off and check the caps under it. MSI often use those 680uF 4V OST RLA caps under the heat sink. I've recapped them with 560uF polies lots of times and it's always worked.
