Let's say I buy a new component that has caps from known badcap manufacturers, and I don't use it at all for 3 years. Will the caps in that component still be "new" after 3 years of no use, or could they still turn bad?

Re: Will the bad caps go bad even if unused?
Caps that soil themselves during a year or two or three of non-use have chemistry problems.
OTOH, good mfrs, e.g. Nichicon and UCC (CDE is more vague as to storage time - 5 or 10 years), recommend that caps that have been in storage for 2 or 3 years should be reconditioned by apply rated V thru a 1K resistor for a half hour or so.PeteS in CA
Power Supplies should be boring: No loud noises, no bright flashes, and no bad smells.

you could let it boot and stay in the bios for 1 hour. that's what i always do after recapping or when i get new (old) mobo to test. that way the dielectric in the caps could be "rebuilded".days are so short when you actually do something..Comment

We got a batch of Jianghai parts once that you could smell before opening the shipping box. After unwrapping some, it took two days to get the smell off my hands.PeteS in CA

Re: Will the bad caps go bad even if unused?
Based on somewhat limited, very abusive tests, I would regard the Jianghai part I tested better than a similar (specs) Lelon part. On the other hand, I regard Nichicon PW, Panasonic FC, or UCC LXZ, which have similar specs, as far better than Jianghai. If it is a system you need immediately, Jianghai might do as a temporary solution, but otherwise I'd suggest looking for sources for parts made by the three 'cons or Panasonic.PeteS in CA

also, Jianghai smell like dead fish. Surprised you didn't mention that, Pete, as you're the one that originally told us.Comment

PeteS. I noted that you have done some heavy cap testing. How was this achieved?

Re: Will the bad caps go bad even if unused?
Just wanted to bounce this off you regarding this post. I have an ABit TS-20 micro board that I put in a new case. I built the system, loaded OS, and fully configured it right out of the box. All was well. I shelved it and pulled it back down after six months to put it into use as an upgrade box. It was DOA! I cleared CMOS. Nothing. Tried memory, PSU, and PCI video in slot to see if any sign of life would occur. Nothing. Just for the hell of it I put my PCI POST card in and I get a code 80 which means "waiting to boot OS" The board powers, CPU fan powers, but no video to check otherwise (can't view POST screen). The POST card says it's "alive". This board is riddled with Choyos from 1000uF to 1500uF. No visible crap cap signs. Haven't ESR'd. Would you say it is likely the caps have failed? Shouldn't take more than twenty minutes to re-cap. Feedback?Comment

by momakaI know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.
For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

by eryjusHello,
First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.
I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.
I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

by Paxman_SwedeHello!
I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.
The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.
I have studied the board and...-

by momakaNormally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow.
But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though.
I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

by captain150I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...-
