    PCV-LX920 BOOT DISK FAILURE!!! Caps??

    ...I own Qty (2) Sony PCV-LX920 Computers. Purchased them Aug 2001 and have been using them daily ever since.

    ...Both computers are experiencing the SAME problem at about the SAME time now. When I turn the computers on I am getting the following below;

    "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

    ...Sometimes it will Boot up fine after a few tries. Both are doing same thing and both computers will finally boot up if you keep trying.

    ...Is this a bad cap on the motherboard issue???

    ...I am a tv-repairman and commonly replace caps everyday in sets and I own a very nice ESR-meter. However before I go tearing down the computer to test my motherboard caps, I wanted to see if THIS type of issue is RELATED to the bad cap problem.

    Thanks for any replys!

    You should open the computer case, and then check the capacitors have any problem by your eye directly first.

      Yes, I know. I took one my computers apart about 6 months ago and did a lot of small resoldering work, it seemed it only helped for a day or so, then it repeated the problem, and today, my shop computer started doing the same problem. (Same model Sony PCV-LX920)

      I DID look at the caps visually when I did the resoldering work on the Home computer but saw no problems, I may have even ESR'ed them, but it was 6 months ago and I do not remember. Now our shop computer is starting the same problem. Sure sounds like maybe a cap problem. And I NEED our servicecenter's computers up and working!! So I badly need any help or advice or experience.

      I can recap my motherboard if need be, but I was just wondering if anyone had any comments before I have to "tear" apart my computer and test the caps one-by-one. AND IF this sounds like a common cap issue!

        What's kind of caps you are using on motherbaord? Your computer's motherboard should be SiS 630E all in one PIII chipset.

          Caps on computer motherboards should be low-ESR caps. Do a check now. A cap may have been good a long time ago but now may be bad now.

            more likely the hard drive is dieing.
            but do a visual for bulging/leaking caps anyway.
            better back up NOW in case they go from flakey to DEAD.

              Hey, it looks a bit similar to the problem I had in the last weeks: computer will only boot after a few tries. It is discussed in another thread -- we've finally figured out the cause was a dying PSU (power supply unit). The autopsy revealed 3 bad caps in the PSU.
