Is there a list of cap makers that made crap parts? or a list of caps known to fail? this would be good for people to know when buying a new motherboard

I don't agree good motherboard = using good caps. Although capacitors is really importance, but design is also more importance.
For example, Asrock is using good caps, but Asrock is not good motherboard choice.Comment

Capacitors are not everything.
Look at Asus, they used to use Japanese caps, now they use some unknown Taiwanese caps, but still they can provide you with a stable environment. OK, some new Asus boards has really crappy caps that explode due to high heat from the CPU, just get them replaced, and it's good again! Thanks to the high quality of Asus BIOS design, PCB design, manual design, tech support, etc.
Now look at Jetway. After being (insert word here) in the (insert word here) multiple times 24/7 for using bad caps, they now spend more money on better quality caps. Good! But now, since they spent more money on better quality caps, they spend less money on connectors, BIOS design, PCB design, QC, etc, causing problems in the long run, for example: unstablity, down systems, CPU/RAM has to be reinstalled because of bad contact in the cheap RAM slots, CPU slots, etc. they use. Bad, bad, bad!Comment

Real life example:
In HKEPC forums, there was a trend of using ASRock motherboards, "savior of the poor people", and now there are many cases of the motherboards suddenly dying with no burnt components or blown caps, right after the 1-year warranty expired :P

I've seen Asus boards with really bad PCB design - CPU bus lines right next to MOSFETs, VRM chip as far as 10cm away from one MOSFET (it was A7V8X-X IIRC). Asus boards are no longer that good as they used to be (e.g. P2B series).
I like PCPartner boards (they're sold as various brands including SuperGrace) - they're cheap and reliable (except for the Licon caps...)Comment

i have seen some real shoddy pcb layout on motherboards.
mostly pcchips,a few ecs,and even an asus.
also stuff like crap nb fans,heatsinks that are not flat and no compound used,onboard sound subsystems with no bypass caps nearby so you hear racket in the speakers from the hdd spinning/accessing.Comment

Good grief! Weren't IC sockets for the RAM part of what killed the Apple III back in the early 80s?... CPU/RAM has to be reinstalled because of bad contact in the cheap RAM slots, CPU slots, etc. they use.PeteS in CA

Some older PC Chips boards have weird PCI and DIMM slots - it was almost impossible to put a card/memory module in, especially for the first time. But once it's installed, it works fine.Comment

I cordially disagree also. The X-versions of most Asus boards I've seen are merely "lite" editions, with visible silkscreen spaces on the PCB in which the "full" edition would have installed ICs supporting such 'optional' functions as firewire, etc.Originally posted by RJARRRPCGPComment

No, that's not generally. It's true for SOME of their boards - e.g. Asus P4PE-X has the same PCB as P4PE but some components are missing (not only the optional ones but often some caps and MOFSETs too). And what's worse, many of the -X boards do not have ANYTHING common with non-X of the same name - the PCB is completely different (P4S8X-X vs. P4S8X). There are some optional parts missing - but there is no board with the same PCB that has all the parts installed! I don't know where those PCBs came from...Comment

You're absolutely right - I stand corrected (I had overgeneralised on seeing the lack of difference between an A7V600 and its -X which I had used in the past).
As for the P4S8X-X, it is indeed strange. Perhaps there's an ASRock board that looks something like it? I'll take a look.
...

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.
I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.
I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

Hello!
I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.
The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.
