Meaning of "Not For New Designs"

Looking through listings of Aluminum Electrolytics at DigiKey, I see on some caps a Product Status of "Not For New Designs".

I'm replacing some Sacon SZ series caps that have seemingly-impossible specs, meaning that it's hard to find product that meets the specs. Some of the ones that come closest have a status of "Not For New Designs". Can you give some insight about where this idea comes from and what it implies?

it means they wont be for sale much longer.

if your trying to replace sub-sized electrolytics, just use polymers instead

It probably means that capacitor manufacturer will soon discontinue the series.Among other customers, engineering departments sometimes buy parts for prototypes of new products. The "Not For New Designs" warns designers that the part probably won't be available for the life of their product, and a different type of part should be chosen.

OTOH, for repairs or experiments, the part would be usable if it is in stock. However, for a MB that uses ultra-low impedance parts with a water-based electrolyte, changing to a polymer part may give longer service.

+1 on replacing with poly where possible.

I have an ABIT BE6-II that's been poly'd for the sole reason I had horrible clearance issues when used with a P3 650MHz due to the metal bracket that was holding the CPU heatsink hitting the caps.
        Main rig:
        Gigabyte B75M-D3H
        Core i5-3470 3.60GHz
        Gigabyte Geforce GTX650 1GB GDDR5
        16GB DDR3-1600
        Samsung SH-224AB DVD-RW
        FSP Bluestorm II 500W (recapped)
        120GB ADATA + 2x Seagate Barracuda ES.2 ST31000340NS 1TB

          just had that,
          recapped a foxcon board.
original rubycon caps (probably custom series) were 7mm with only 8mm under the heatsink.
          only poly's would fit.
