In Vista or 7 it's the same by default. DLLs and other files cannot be dropped unless the user allows it to happen or bypassess the default security. XP and 2K with managed users is also this way.

A quote for everyone to read:

"A virus/trojan/worm author who successfully targeted specifically Apache httpd Linux/x86 Web servers would both have an extremely target-rich environment and instantly earn lasting fame, and yet it doesn't happen."
The number of Apache servers pales in comparison to even the number of OSX desktops. No one cares.

Second, Apache does get hacked, just not often by automated scripts. Sure, IIS 5 and below sucked ass and got wormed pretty easily. However, IIS6 and above have a significantly better security record than Apache.

      Re: LOL virus fail.

I meant it towards ratdude, since he usually carries a windows-bashing linux-pushing agenda in his posts.

Sorry acs, I respect you and feel rather childish now.

It was meant as satire towards ratdude's claims that Windows is 100% likely to get infected with not even an article or something to back it up.

        Very well, all is forgiven.

And Washu, I think we'll have to agree to disagree.
A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.

That looks like a pop-up from a Java script.

              Re: LOL virus fail.

All I know is that my win 7 on this new Hp went down hard. During the PC's bootup my son was working on our house wiring and he turned off the main breaker. I couldn't get it to boot again no how no way. I had to do the three disk factory restore to fix it.
Now I have not had any real problems with this Win 7 getting infected with anything. I'm sure if I were going to Pirate and Porn sites The alarms would start going off. To protect my system I use Norton, Malwarebytes, ccleaner, and Vopt9 as a defrag. Some day I'm going to get and Apple with some form of OSX on it. I just want to see what Apple computers are all about.

There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

                  Re: LOL virus fail.

When one of these pops up, I disconnect the network cable as quickly as possible so it can't automatically download and run an executable. In the time it takes to open Task Manager and end the browser's process, the executable could have been fully downloaded and started running. You can unplug the computer's power or force it to crash as well (there is an option to force some versions of Windows to crash by holding Ctrl and pressing Scroll Lock twice).

Norton is protected so nothing can end its processes or modify any of its files.

You should see what happens when someone looks at a "free online games" site or music-related sites. There is a site that my mother tries to look at that crashes Internet Explorer. The same site used to try to download malware onto the computer every time you clicked on a link. When each page loaded, Norton would produce three warning messages, each for a different type of malware.

yeah with wondiws it just starts on its own.. frickin pron...

I do a image search in google. Looking through the pictures, I click on one. I'm redirected to a site with a nice little glowing green circle and the text:

                    "Commencing Scan Procedure..."

Then the browser window is shrunk as far as possible, and a pop-up comes up with the following text:

"The page at http: //www1.setupclean-softpc.in says:

It also tries to open an exe file. I didn't take notes on that one. Yeah... that ain't gonna work.

Now what this hapless little piece of malware didn't realize was that I was running Linux. So I yawn, move the pointer up to the system monitor, open it, find the firefox process, and kill it. Then I restart firefox. It asks if I want to open my previous tabs or start a new session. I think I'll start a new session. Problem solved.

                    Virus fail.

If I had been running Windows, I'd most likely be screwed right now.

I just thought I'd share this little piece of comedy with everyone.

Edit: I added a space to the URL in the quoted section above to keep anyone from clicking it.
