  • Re: Windows 7 system restore

It depends on when the system restore point was made. Any system changes after the restore will be gone, but any file system changes will remain

If you have a second drive you can use the windows backup to make an image of your system. You can then restore it from the setup DVD and it will put your system back exactly as it was. Same as making a ghost image.

    Re: USB TV tuners.

You're not getting it. It's an DVB-T tuner, not PAL. The old analog rules of frame interlacing do not apply. All it does is pass a raw MPEG2 stream. It doesn't care about if the video is interlaced or not. In fact the cheap cards don't have the power to decode the MPEG2 so they have no choice but to pass it unmodified. The max bitrate is 32 mbit/sec. As crappy as it is, USB2 has more than enough bandwidth to carry it....

    Re: USB TV tuners.

Why are you going with an SD card? That's not going to give reasonable performance unless it is mated with an expensive controller, and 64 GB SD cards are insanely expensive already.

You can get PATA SSDs. They are crappy compared to a good SATA SSD, but would blow your SD card out of the water and they are cheaper.

Or go with a CF card in a CF->PATA adapter. Still would be cheaper and probably faster than a SD card used in this way.

Dell Studio 15 and Latitude E5400 both have firewire and are well under $1K. Don't know what chipset, but I assume TI.

    SSD + USB 2.5" HDD?

If you care about space then just get the biggest 5400 RPM you can afford. A bigger drive will still be faster most of the time. A 7200 isn't going to make a huge difference in performance, but it will hurt your battery life and produce more noise and heat.

It's not the most accurate benchmark, but the difference between my 5400 and 7200 Seagate Momentus drives in the Win7 index is 0.1....

Do you need lots of space? If not get an SSD. I have an X25-V in my netbook and it made it much faster. You'll see a much bigger increase in speed than going with a 7200 RPM drive. Also your heat and power usage will go down, not up.

I'd try to find a Pentium M if at all possible and affordable. The n1000c is a P4. Besides heat and power use the P-M is MUCH faster.

Avoid the D600. Any other Dell in your price/feature range is fine, just not the D600.

Basically every single D600 at work eventually died a slow and strange death. First the nic would become flaky, requiring multiple reboots to enable. Then the USB, cardbus slots, wireless would all go in the same way. Eventually it would not boot at all.

We had several D400s of similar vintage that were beat to hell far more than the D600s and they are all fine. A couple of HD failures, but that's it.

    Re: sister withdraw

Actually 7 can go way below 700 megs idle on a 1 Gig machine. It realizes when resources are low and adjusts accordingly. I have it on a couple of machines with 1 gig and it uses about 400 megs idle. With some tweeking you can get that down lower. I've even tried on 512 MB just to see what it does, it went down to just over 200 MB idle.

Also, if you have a real video card then Aero has a very minimal impact on memory. 7 doesn't buffer windows in system RAM like Vista does, everything is put in the video RAM.

  • Re: Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L + Intel E7500

Yea, DDR2 has skyrocketed. I just paid $50 for a single 2 GB DDR2 DIMM, and that was on sale. I remember paying $40 for a 4 Gig kit not to long ago.

Problem is DDR3 hasn't dropped either. Sure it's not insane anymore, but it's still about the same as the expensive DDR2.

  • Re: Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L + Intel E7500

I have almost the same board, the GA-EG41M-US2H in my HTPC. Had it about a year and it works great. Running a slightly OC'ed e5200 with no stability issues at all.

When you say your wife's current PC already has 2 GB of RAM, is it fast enough? All Intel x3x and x4x chipsets need at least 667 MHz DDR2 RAM. 533 and lower will not work.

I'm not familiar with that dock, but could it be like the Dell D series where you need a bigger power brick?

  • Re: Laptop screen lines

    One of three possibilities:

    1) The LCD panel is shot.

    2) The connecting cable is shot.

    3) The Video RAM is shot.

If it's 1 or 2 then it's a pretty easy fix if you can get the part cheap. Look around and see what the prices on new screens and cables are and see if it's worth it to you. You also could just use it with an external monitor all the time if you don't care.

If it's 3 then you have to replace the MB and that's probably not worth it.

If you can, plug in an...

    Re: Adding new RAM

I've been putting RAM in PCs since the days of individual DIP chips and I have never taken a MB out just for that. Never had a board die from it either. As long as the correct MB support standoffs are in place there is no issue.

    Re: New RAM

Put the 800MHz RAM with the E2160. It is by far the faster chip and core 2s like having synchronous FSB and RAM. You still probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference on either chip between 667 and 800, but benchmarks will show a bigger diff % on the E2160.

P4s don't seem to care as much as Core2s about memory speed. You would never notice the difference. Put that money towards a better upgrade.

On the specification page you just linked to: "Power: 19.2 Watts"

    That's a far cry from 50 W....

We used to run slimline GX260s with 2 X HD, DVD-RW and dual video cards (1 AGP, on PCI) on the 180 W slimline power supplies. Never had any power issues. You'll be fine with 250 W.

No, you should still install updates, just not 971033. On all the Win 7 PCs I've ever seen it's unselected by default so it's easy to avoid. Just tell it to hide the update and you won't have to worry about it again.

    Re: New build

What fan are you ever going to find in a PC that needs 50W? That's insane and completely unrealistic.

A real 150 CFM fan (Delta AFB 120 mm) uses less than 9 W. It's also way overkill for pretty much anything, so real PC fans would use less.

stevo will be fine with that 350W. As long as it's not a crappy brand it will do fine.
