Hmm, interesting read on the UPS AC caps...

Maybe I should open up my Riello 6KW UPS and have a look inside...

Though that thing scares me, I got it for free from my old workplace, when they changed to a APC Infrastructure UPS system. It was then about 5 years old and allot of dust plus cement from when some morons where drilling a hole right next to the UPS in the server room had gotten into it, so I was cleaning it... And managed to get such a big static discharge from the batteries that I thought my heart would stop (just from the fear of what happened) So I prefer to leave well enough alone when it comes to that UPS

It has 308VDC coming from the batteries according to the management software

The servers managed quite ok, they stood in a rack a small bit away...

But the hole they where drilling was to get a 16amp cable up to the UPS (it only had a 10amp and we had so many servers so the fuse got blow...)

So as you can guess they where drilling the hole right behind the UPS... Which has a real nice 230v Papst fan sucking a ton of air in... You can guess the rest...

Too bad it was not temperature controlled like the fans in the servers, that would have helped too... Not hiring idiots to lay the new cable might also have helped

This is a very informative paper. Interesting that the proposal is to take VRM power frequencies to 2Mhz. Also that predictably ceramics take over from OSCON as frequency increases. Very interesting that at frequencies above 300Khz the need for bulk capacitance steadily disappears.

Will look forward to these new technologies emerging.
