Re: Cnet Article 12/10/05
Good article, but does not delve far enough into bad-cap manufacturers or other products which are affected, ie. routers etc.
Also, does the following statement exclude non-Intel chipset boards from the issues, or is it just me reading too much into it?
"In fact, PCs from Hewlett-Packard and Apple Computer and other PCs using Intel motherboards have all faced similar issues" -
Re: Cnet Article 12/10/05
there are errors like you noted. such articles are never perfect. overall it was good. the more press the better on this issue errors or not. it is good to see badcaps articles approved for publishing.
I think we will see lots of rubycons on dell boards in future. they are taking a big financial hit.Comment

Story: When good capacitors go bad
I was the first person to bring this subject in the public spotlight - see my site for all the info starting from the beginning as I tried in vain to get places like news.com to carry this story years ago, long before badcaps.net existed.

Re: Cnet Article 12/10/05
this issue was known from about 98.
i started recapping mobo's then.hell in 99 or so when i bought a new mobo at the dma computerfest i would open the box and check the cap brand first.
got a bunch of work from dealers that had returns they were stuck with.
you would think the industry would get its act together in 7 years!Comment

I read back in time on Mr. Holzmans bio to find his references to bad caps.
He certainly has computer savvy but I didn't see references to bad caps on motherboards.
It's a tough claim to say any person was the first at anything.
I could say I was the first in my nieghborhood to hook up my friends with our own telephone system, I was nine, soo... who cares.JimComment

Re: Cnet Article 2005 Nov 10
no he has cap pics on his page and links to press articles/scans, no repair info though. i came accross his site a few years ago. i just thought that the comment was unnecessary, badcaps.net is becoming an excellent reference for badcaps issue but that is because of the members who are posting great info. THANKS guys!
i smiled seeing a top of the page reference on slashdot This has been documented on BadCaps.net for some time and an additional reference in the CNET article gives an idea on how far the forums have come.
i think everybody enjoys to help beginners around the world recap their boards and they in turn will teach their friends the craft. it makes me smile when people report back with success. ok we get a few no post reports as well heh.
anywayTHANKS for your contributions to your community.
welcome the new members who came via CNET or Slashdot.

Hi all! So happy to have found this community.
I'm looking for a schematic or a board view of the logic board used by the "Late 2005" Apple Power Mac G5 Quad-core or Dual-core.
Apple uses identifiers 820-1628, 820-1628-A, and 661-3726 for this part.
Since the schematics seem very hard to find, I'm specifically interested in Apple's "U4 (Kodiak)" implementation of the IBM CPC945 northbridge, and particularly how Apple wired the memory controller pins.
There's tons of misinformation about this chip online, and I'd be...-

Hello everyone! :-)
An acquaintance of mine works as a DJ in his spare time and brought me a defective QSC active loudspeaker (Model: K10.2) for repair.
Error description: The device could not be switched on (after he lent it to another DJ).
A visual inspection revealed an obviously blown fuse (F41) and a cracked thermistor (R41) on the mains filter board. A closer look at the amplifier board revealed two defective power MOSFETS (Q13, Q14) and other defective components on the +12VLOW rail.
After replacing all the obviously defective components, the...-

by orion78frHi !
Do anyone have boardview and schematics for the Asus motherboard UX434DA for the laptop UM433D ?
I need them because I'm going to try to bypass bios password by shorting the SCL and SDA pins while the BIOS checks the password as told in this article : https://davidzou.com/articles/bios-password-bypass
I can't find any way to recover password (alt+r while prompted for password doesn't work). If you know any other way to bypass the bios password, I'll gladly take it.
If nobody have these, can someone tell me which chip is the bios on this...-

Note to mods: please remove the first thread i posted. It had crappy title. Hopefully this will make some powermac expert look at it more likely
So i bought PowerMac G5, which worked for around an hour. Then i decided to partially strip it down and re-paste CPU, after which it still worked. However just after i added DDR2 memory into it and connected it to 220v, the mac made a loud pop noise, diagnostic leds on the front side of motherboard shortly blinked and since then, the power mac has no signs of life at all
PSU is API4fS13. There is no visibly broken component... -
by johnson5000System (dual cpu Tyan K8WE) would turn on for a few seconds and then turn off. Looked at capacitors and a couple were bulged at the top so replaced them with cheap ebay caps. This worked and it ran fine, so I should have stopped there. I figured that the rest of the caps were going to need replaced eventually so I order polymer caps that matched the originals, about 50 in total of various ratings with Nichicon RME caps. Replaced them all and now the board will turn on for a few seconds and then shut off like before. I read that electrolytics can't always be replaced with polymers so I order some...
