LG 55LB7200 - Bad LED backlights or panel?

Hey, guys! I picked up this set last night. The owner complained the picture would turn off after various lengths of time, but the sound would persist. I think I'm looking at two bad LED strips. In previous sets I've worked on, a single LED failure caused the whole backlight to turn off. Is it possible only certain strips are failing here?

I've not come across the mura effect yet. Could this be the issue? I also noticed temporary image persistence after sitting in the menu for some time.

I attached a picture of it on a solid white screen.

    Thanks for your opinions!

Yea, it looks like you have 2 bad half-strips and a possible 1 or 2 LEDs..

I am assuming you are using an LED Power Supply to get the LEDs going??

It's been my experience that, especially with LGs, you can have 1 bad LED and, depending on it's position, it can take down the whole array...

Thanks for the reply! I didn't take the first screw out yet. The TV works - but with the dark spots (and that temporary image persistence). I just used a solid white video to better see the situation.

I guess I'll pull the unit apart this weekend and replace some LEDs.

for some caveats on removing the panel display panel..

I would also invest in a pair of items pictured..

        Harbor Freight has them..

They will save you a WORLD of heartache..

Thanks! I've just got two single large suction cups I've used from Harbor Freight. The doubles with the handle definitely look better. I'll probably stop for them later.

My most worrisome times are always lifting the panels and hoping not to drop them when I move them away from the set.

Heh Yer preaching to the choir on that point.. I use the single-suction ones for small panels less than 42" Anything larger the dual-suction ones are a must.. Have yet to drop a panel using the dual ones.. When you un-suction them, pull the lever back to release position gently.. Don't snap it back... Learned that the hard way...

              Failure Symptom

No picture, just red vertical stripes. Google search shows quite common problem for these recent Vizio M series although red vertical stripe pattern may differ. Some call it "Netflix" boot screen haha.

              Where is the short?

Panel has 4x buffer boards. Quickly found the 1/4 panel buffer board with the problem by selectively disconnecting buffer board flex cables.

Having recently fixed another Vizio with similar symptoms that was a shorted ESD diode array ( link ) Probed the ESD diode array but...

Un70TU7000b Backlights work, no picture, has sound, panel shorted caps
              by EazyBone
Picked up this Samsung above thinking it'd be backlights but it isn't. Now MAYBE I'll get lucky.
Found some shorted caps among the panel boards. Each cap along the line is shorted. On every board (3 panel driver boards)I disconnect each side right and left ribbons and they are no longer shorted caps and have about 1.5Mohm resistance (on left and right boards). The middle board has the main board disconnected and the caps are shorted. Last 4 pics show arrow to caps.

Now what exactly do I need to do in order to attempt to fix this issue?

do I have to take each one...

75UK6190 blank screen, shorted caps on panel strips
              by mecha1166
I have 2: 75UK6190 units. One has a broken panel - it lights up and shows a bit of graphics. The other LG tv lights up but has no video. Turns on/off ok, and I swapped all the boards to check them all. I exposed the strips on the bottom of both panels. I tested the caps along the LED strips on the bottom of the panel. About 12 smd cap chips on the tv with no video, test shorted. I talked to LG tech support but they do not repair to this level, they just replace the panel. Now, there is a Philips mainboard that a smd capacitor chip shorts and causes a squeal from the power supply, and the fix is...

LG 49UJ6500 LCD panel lighter band that goes away
              by howardc64
49UJ6500 LCD panel has a lighter band on top when first powered on. Goes away (or gets much fainter) after TV on for a few min. After powered off for awhile and power back on, same band appears. If powered on immediately after powering off, no or much fainter band. Running the latest firmware.

Disassembled the TV and lifted the LCD panel during testing. Band is on the LCD panel (can see the band on the panel as I lift it slightly) Backlight is perfectly even at the top edge. Double checked LCD panel alignment in the frame and is perfect but since band moved with the panel, its on...

SAMSUNG UN50TU8000F rebooting, backlight ok. No 12v to panel boards.
              by triplefour
TV flashes backlight then reboots over and over. no image. Client said it used to have image for a bit before rebooting. Got worse over time.

              tcon is built into mainboard.
Only one cable goes to panel boards.
there is a cable from one panel board to the other that links them.
cost cutting measure that results in us having harder time to diagnose.
removing the link to the second panel board allows TV to stay on with stable backlight but no image.
used cut off tape method to mask 1 maybe 2 pins on the side of the cable that goes to that second panel board....
