Sony KDL 46W4100 with worsening vertical lines in horiz blocks

I've owned this TV since new, about 10 years old, but in last few months started to show some vertical lines in the bottom half of the screen which would disappear after a few minutes "warming up".

Lately the vertical lines fill the whole screen, and no longer disappear. They are laid out in four and a bit horizontal bands, and are mostly static but sometimes seem to have a little 'flicker'. You can still see the picture 'behind' the lines, and appear on all inputs I've tested: several HDMI and internal TV as well as the menu screen. See attached for examples.

I'm competent with electronics, but never done an LCD repair. Wondering if this looks fixable - main board or tcon replacement?? - or should I call it a day and get a new TV?

Could be a bad tcon board, if so they are pretty easy to change out.

Is there any good way to test that theory short of buying a new board and swapping it?

Well get out the old trusty hairdryer and heat up the mainboard, heat the ic's and the capacitors etc. see if the picture clears up, if not do the same to the powerboard, there's probably test points on your tcon but I can't tell where they are on this one.

Re: Sony KDL 46W4100 with worsening vertical lines in horiz blocks

Here's some pics of the inside. I disconnected the t-con board (4 ribbon tapes, 2 larger cables) and reattached, tried putting light pressure on tape connection, no change in the picture defect from earlier pics. I can't see any components that look obv bad, but I'm no expert.

I assume the t-con pcb board should be removable from the heatsink housing? I think i've removed all screws (there's one thing that looks a bit like a flush thumbscrew with a circular key which I don't know how I'd remove - see the housing closeup near the number LJ63-05576B) but it still seems to be pretty securely attached, apparently by various thermal pads?? Is there a trick?

I tried to grab pic of identifying marks on the t-con board, you can see inside the housing one number printed on the PCB 404652ASNC6LV3.7, and a barcoded sticker with S2151J8E0407 / 005191, which looks like it might be this board: https://www.shopjimmy.com/sony-1-857...-con-board.htm

Not in stock anyway, but would be nice if I could reassure myself that this was the likely culprit before I buy a new one.

You're right just stuck on with thermal pads, pull it off gently to keep thermal pads in tact.

What is your panel sticker number? will be on tv metal chassis somewhere, white sticker.

Panel sticker is cunningly hidden under the metal shield which holds the main board, challenge to get a picture without dissembling main & power board, but sticker shows this Samsung S-LCD panel:

                    LTY460HC01
                    0821

                    LTY460HC01103

Also managed to extract the t con board from its enclosure, picture also attached. No signs of obv damage there.

I'll try some heating of the main board next - tho it makes me nervous that I might damage something. Is the idea to reflow solder or expand a cracked joint back to contact, or do some of the analog components respond to heat for some reason? or something else? sorry for n00b questions.

Use hair dryer for heating the main board.

In case anyone finds this thread, wanted to post resolution.

I tried heating but no effect. So I thought I'd try replacing the t con board and eventually found one on e-bay for $40 or so. lo & behold swapping it out made the tv work like new again. yay!

Is there any use for the old t con board (can it be refurbed by switching out capacitors or whatever?) or should I just throw it out.

Thanks for the encouragement to explore and get it fixed!

Thanks for feedback, I would hang onto the old tcon, odds are there's lots of good components on it that you may need at some point and maybe you can fix it and have a spare, the older these tvs get the harder parts are to find.

Hello, I have a screen in where sometimes when I open it pop-up vertical multicolor lines (I would say the most of them are green). If I tun off and turn on the screen the lines dissapear or if I leave open the screen after approximately five minutes the lines gone. I measured the below voltages on the main PCB and on the T-CON board and the voltages are the same when it doesn’t display the vertical lines and when it displays the vertical lines. Also, I cleaned all the connectors very good with IPA. I moved back and forth the connectors and the COF tabs but the vertical lines didn't displayed...

                            Hello,

                            i order a t-con because i had bad colors on my SONY KDL-40V3000 :

With the new t-con the color are good but there are vertical lines on all the screen :

I've tried the old t-con and it returned to the initial issue (bad colors but no vertical lines)

Is there a way to fix the vertical lines on the new t-con ?

                            Thank you for your help

Thanks for offering your assistance with this. I'm an electronics enthusiast with moderate level of competence (have a decent lab with two power supplies, microscope, DSO, hot air, good iron, can competently work at a component level on SMDs, design and solder own PCBs etc). I really enjoying fixing things and learning new stuff so took up a free 58" LED TV and have been googling and watching Youtube videos to see if I can fix this! I am happy to go down to individual component replacement/strip replacement etc - it's all in the name of learning.

The issues are as follows: the...

I recently replaced the led backlights with LB65041 LED Backlight Strips and after putting it back together the backlights work but there are only colored vertical lines only in the center of the tv. I can see the Netflix logo (jumbled) after a minute or less the screen went dark. When I turned it on again the lines were back. Then I replaced the t-con board but the same vertical lines in the picture. My question is what is my next step? Could it be a source tab bond issue? A buffer board issue? Could I have loosened a connection to the panel when replacing the backlights? Should I replace the...

I have an Siemens HMI with vertical lines on half of the screen. These lines aren't scrambled garbage but rather very regular in pattern and color. I have replaced the LCD with a new one and still the problem persists. I'm wondering if this isn't indicative of a bad video process chip or video memory? Any help would be appreciated. The cable appears to be OK but one pin on the header is unpopulated, though there isn't any loose wire to suggest one broke off or popped out of the connector. In the picture below where the connector is busted out of the side, I did that with my small screw driver...
