No oscilloscope yet, that is on my "to get list" Are there reasonably priced one's for a hobbyist ?

The best value for money one right now is a Rigol DS1054Z, but at $399 (at last check), I'm not sure it counts as reasonable for anyone but a very interested hobbyist.

You can often get a used analog one for about $50, if you look around on eBay for ones local to you. One of those will be sufficient, but a digital scope is better. Feel free to ask if a scope you see is decent and worth purchasing. Some of the really old digital ones aren't much good, so they should be avoided.

Checked it out I got 2.3 ohms so that's all good.

I repaired a 50PS30 recently. It too had good voltages but an odd pic and the set_up pot had no effect on the picture at all but the other pots did. It was the large 2.2ohm resistor feeding the pot, in your case R363. May as well measure it.

Just an observation, when I plug the TV in and its cold the picture is a little better, once warm it gets darker.

Ouch, That's going to have to wait for now. It could be a good "to me from me" Christmas gift next year.

could bad caps be causing this issue? have you checked the esr/ratings of them all

I don't have a proper esr meter for that, it's on the way.
I did visually check them and all looks good

You can try using a hairdryer to pinpoint the fault, heating up parts of the board. You can use a toilet roll tube to direct the airflow more precisely, just be careful not to overheat the hairdryer by restricting the airflow too much.

Good thinking, I had to do the oven trick with my main board that had the HDMI inputs on a 50pk750 because of bad solder joints and it worked. I did that 3 times and got an extra 18 months out of the board until I found a cheap replacement

Using this method, as well as a can of freezer spray, I was able to pinpoint the fault on my Panasonic plasma TV that was causing it to shut down after about five minutes of operation.

Thanks for the tips and tricks but still no luck, I will tinker with it until my new board arrives from you neck of the woods, then it goes into the scavenge part pile.

tomorrow I am going to spray the whole board contact cleaner then blow it off with some nitrogen hoping that maybe something is on the board that i cant see is causing a short....I am also going to remove one leg of the stand off resisters so I can get an accurate ohm reading. There is a pack of 6-8 resisters covered in goop, any tips or tricks on removing the goop silicone besides cutting it out ?

Cutting it out is the only way, unfortunately. IPA will soften it slightly (not the beer... isopropyl alcohol)

Well no luck, I checked all resistor and all were bang on. I did notice heat sinks run hotter than normal. If the TV has been on for 15-20 min you can only put your hand on for about 10 seconds.

It's not an easy fault to track without a scope unfortunately.

What do I need for basic entry level to get me stated.

Either of those are useful, you will also need probes to use with them so that could factor into which one you get.

60MHz is better than 40MHz

The Hitachi is also a good scope, the Meguro sounds like a Chinese clone. Some of the Chinese clones are good, but it is hit and miss.

2ch is all you need for these applications.

I got the Meguro Mo-1253, I would have liked the Hitachi but there was no negotiating with him. If you can give me a few pointers on how to check the chips on the board that would be great.
