    Transistor-only colour TV sets

Colour TV broadcasting started in the US in 1953, and in 1960 in Japan.

There were some valve/tube colour TV sets from RCA, including the RCA CTC4 and CTC5 chassis. Their circuits show it is possible to make a valve colour TV set, so it should be possible to make a transistor-only colour TV set (no ICs or hybrid modules).

I am curious if there were any transistor-only (with no ICs or hybrid modules) colour TV sets (most likely to be American or Japanese sets).

If anyone has information on transistor-only colour TV sets, please list such sets here!
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

i remember many tv designs with no i.c's in them.
seems the first one i saw was a sanyo or mitsubishi.
    and btw i am rebuilding a ctc2 chassis.yes the 15gp22 is good.

Yes, I have worked on very few TVs that were from transistor era. Remember, back then the most transistors couldn't handle high MHz (RF stuff) so many make kept using glass tube and metal tiny tube on tuners till early 80's.

Keep in mind, germinum transistors was used till 65-66 even bit later then silicon took over quick but specifications was not as refined till 70's. But transistors made huge simpifications on the circuit part count vs tube and current demand dropped and efficienty went up.

At my work is 27" JVC CRT with all the newest stuff stuffed in it only sip 105W and does have component input.
But late model 3 CRTs with ICs and flyback transformer THUMPS LCD and DLP in that size on energy efficienty like RCA D52Wxx models (52") that only need 230W and slightly few watts more on 61" models. I'm speaking of 2002-2006 models.

That took years till 2006 that Samsung came out with LED DLP that bought down to 56" with 230W instead of higher watts like 250 or more watts. LCDs larger than 22" with CCFL can't match, neither the Plasma panels. Future goes to the LED as light source and OLED, SED and efficient panels.

"green wattage" LCDs with CCFL is good to around 22" and from there, watts goes up dramatically. My 19" samsung is around 30-45W vs 17" CRT that LCD replaced was 80W.

Honestly best performing with blackest blacks goes to CRT, LED DLP and OLED, SED etc. Plasma can't compete either because of the slight glow due to current to keep cells at the "trigger point" for fast response, hence the tinted glass in front of panel, to get some contrast at expense of brightness levels, but that also shortens the plasma panel life. And LCD backlight had to do extreme lumens to provide reasonable brightness AT expense of black levels and diffcult to keep those glow, beamlights and light "hot spots" to a minimum.

      Cheers, Wizard
