Im thinking keep backlight as low as possible and never use the 3D

Oh, and which route should i go here? How can i test that power is being sent to the diodes before i go through all the work to try and remove them from the heatsinks

if you don't have the equipment to change them, then you could take it to someone else to do, or change out whole strips that have failed. either way, you should end up with a working unit.
