SHARP LC-46DG2U Vertical Lines on menus / block pattern on display

Hi all. Thanks to the owner/mods for allowing thread creation so quickly on this site. I hope to learn a lot.

This unit is coming up on 8 years old. The symptoms, seen in the pics, started up a few weeks ago. They appear soon after turning the set on. They occur on any input, HDMI or component. It seemed initially it was only horizontal on the display, but I may not have been looking closely enough. It does not seem to affect anything if I push on the input ports (if that means anything to anyone).

From what I've read I possibly could get away with just a capacitor swap out or a t-con board. Again, I'm an extreme novice with this stuff and I'm only repeating a bit of what I've read around the 'net.

Any assistance to set me in the right direction would be highly appreciated. I hope the pics are good enough.

EDIT: I'm sorry, it's the 52 not the 46, but I don't think that makes any difference?

Faulty main board. More predominately one of the nvram modules that run the main processor. Try heating the processor and the ram modules near the processor up and see if the problem goes away

Thanks for such a quick reply. I'd like to say I knew what you're talking about, but have absolutely no idea. I don't know where these components are and how one safely heats them.

The main board is the board that takes all the inputs. On that board there is a metal shield underneath that Shield there's a processor near the top of the board and near that processor there's two smaller black squares one above it and one near the right side. The small square above the main processor with the heatsink on it is most likely the problem you could try hitting that one up with a hairdryer in with the TV on and see if it goes away. This board is a real bugger to fix. I have not successfully been able to repair it yet with the ones I worked on

Thanks again. So let me ask another incredibly novice question. Since I see a lot of repair suggestions involving placing the unit face down when doing repairs, that would not apply here I assume. The other would be more so for soldering and the like of course, correct?

lay the tv face down on a soft surface like a blanket etc remove the stand and then the back cover then replace just the stand that way you can work on the tv a little easier.

Hey, just as a follow up, wanted to let you know that the early testing of this has seemed to work so far. It was a real bugger getting that inside shield to come off as the screws were incredibly tight, but managed. There does seem to actually be a secondary shield on that main board. I didn't really see a traditional looking heatsink, unless it's under that second shield (see pic), which doesn't simply have screws to detach it.

Therefore, I just hit that area with the lower level of heat on a hair dryer. The lines did come back initially, so I continued doing it. It seems to be holding better now. I'll probably apply the heat one more time before closing the unit up.

Does anyone know why this works? I suppose there is no way to tell how long this is going to last.

Re: SHARP LC-46DG2U Vertical Lines on menus / block pattern on display

Hitting it with heat isnt a fix its really to prove what board is at fault so now to need to look for a replacement board look for any stckers etc on the board as you need too match all the numbers up on your replacement.
It could be one of the ics at fault or maybe a bad smd capactor can you narrow down the area your heating maybe use a cardboard roll and blow the hot air down that way you can heat a smaller area.

Ok, thanks Vince. But what area should I be heating? Like I said, I don't see a conventional heatsink as far as how I know they're supposed to look.

I'd start by replacing those caps under that heatsink, bet one has high esr.

Totally lost me. Again, I'm a complete novice. I don't know what a cap is. I'm not sure which is the heatsink and I don't know how you tell what esr is or what that even means.

Those little cans you see in the circle you drew. there's 5 of em,they are prone to "dry out" by the heat under that heatsink.
If you have a can of air,the ones you get to blow out your pc,and hold the can upside down you can freeze those caps while the tv is on and see if the symptoms go away.

watch this video,he uses it to find a short but it does give you a good example on how to use it.

                            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7X_E9nq27k

By freezing those caps, they often start working as they should for a bit, giving away that they are defective, hope that makes sense to you.

Ahh...ok thank you. The strange thing is that since I did the heat up, the TV has been functioning normally for a few hours, though apparently I shouldn't expect any long term results. I do see there are main boards for sale on eBay for around $80 or less which apparently come from units with shattered screens.

Hello again! I have come back for some wisdom and hopefully for some guidance with this problem I'm having. The TV is a 4k 55" Sharp LC-55p6050u and the problem is every other line of the bottom 32 lines flickers out, comes mostly back, then flickers out again, and repeats this continually. The lines on the bottom right of the screen go out completely while the lines on the bottom left are affected so slightly that it's almost impossible to see it. There is a gradual gradient from appearing almost perfectly fine on the bottom left, to an obvious problem on the bottom right.

                                The...

I snagged this TV set from a neighbor since I have been successful in repairing numerous other TVs. I assume this probably happens to other TV sets and may have been addressed in another thread. If so please point me in the right direction.

I have a Sharp 50bj2ke which is 6 month out of gaurantee and has devoloped horizontal lines, i have tried to research as much as possible but i am no further is diagnosing the issue. When i turn the tv on it works good with only a thin line right at the top of the screen which i could live with but after a couple hours of use the lines start to appear in the middle of the screen and now the bottom.
