Panasonic VIERA TC-P60GT50 HDMI issue - YALS (Yet another lightning strike)

    Hey guys,

New here, but looking for opinions. We had a BIG storm come through on Sunday with many lighting strikes all around. I have DirecTV for TV and cable for internet. One lightning strike knocked out the Internet for several hours. During that storm my TV HDMI ports decided to go crazy on me.

Now, I don't have a coax from the cable company going to my TV, but I do have DirecTV coax going to the TV. I'm not sure if lightning did get it, but right now it's my best guess.

Let me try to describe the symptoms of my TV. My menu systems all work, on screen display seems fine, I can see menus when switching between inputs, TV menu comes up fine. My HDMI is having issues, but it's not completely dead. If HDMI just totally died, it'd be easier to diagnose (maybe), but I'm seeing signs of life. but it does seem to be getting worse.

When I turned on HDMI right after the storm, the screen would flicker with the DTV box hooked up. It would flicker, then it would go snowy white, then back on to TV, then flicker more. Then, it would just lose the signal, and the TV would report that the TV could not find signal. I've switched through all 4 HDMI ports, and the same behaviour happens. Sometimes, I can reset the DTV box, (it's a genie client, so it reboots fairly quickly), and when I do a reboot, sometimes I will see the TV recognize input (but not show anything), and then go back to searching for signal. Other times I will see the low resolution boot screen of DTV, then the TV will go black, saying searching for signal.

I know lightning does crazy things. Does this sound like something lighting would do? I don't remember a specific strike, but there was a LOT of lighting in the area.

If anyone could offer their opinions, I'd appreciate it. Also, if you have suggestions of what to do, that'd be helpful too. Seriously, thanks for any help I can get.

I'm kinda freaking out that my baby (the TV) is in bad shape. The TV is 4 years old, but has been great.

    Thanks

    Woody

your simpliest method of "testing" is get another "good source" (ie. dvd / bluray player). Plug it in and see what's up. That will quickly tell if its the dtv box, hdmi cable, or ports(s).

      Thanks bud for your reply.

I should have mentioned, that I am having issues with multiple DTV boxes and other HDMI connect things. They work on other TVs, but show the same wacky behavior on the Panasonic.

Another piece of info. The TV has a component breakout cable. I hooked up DTV through the component + the breakout cable and I have picture again. Still the HDMI does not work.

Is this typical? Would component work if HDMI doesn't?

Any other recommendations of what to look for or suggestions on how to fix the HDMI issue?

        Thanks Again.

You'll probably have to get a new board. Happened to me with a 50" Panasonic plasma. Lightning took out the hdmi.

I'm having a heck of a time finding that board in stock online. I wonder if it's still being made.

                Thanks for your help.

Pts online has a repair service for it for $95. They are in Indy.

Btw, plasma haven't been made since 2014, so it's hard to find any new parts.

Yes it's a 17 year old Panasonic plasma!

I was watching TV when there was a huge lighting strike nearby my house that shook the house. When that happened, the picture on the TV froze and the TV wouldn't turn off except by pulling the power cable. Now if you plug in the TV, it seems to turn on (it makes the turn on "clikcs" it always does, the red power light comes on but there is no picture, although I can see the back light around the edges. And the TV doesn't respond to the power button on the remote to turn off, and doesn't respond to the manual power button on the front...

HP EliteBook 840 G6 – no power after lightning strike
                    by Bardou Kari
                    Hi,
I’m trying to fix an HP EliteBook 840 G6 that stopped working after a lightning storm.

                    – Charger is OK and 19V is present at the motherboard.
                    – No charging LED, no fan, no reaction.
                    – I don’t see any 3.3V or 5V near the coils.
                    – Battery is unplugged.
                    – I’m new to board repair but can use a multimeter.

I added a clear photo of the board.
Any idea where to start or what to check next?
Thanks a lot for your help!...

Samsung UN60EH6000 wont come on after lightning strike.
                    by karthur
We had a lightning strike a few days ago really close to my house. My Samsung UN60EH6000 was on when it hit. Afterwards, the TV would not come back on.

I had repaired this TV a few years back by replacing the T-Con board. (The post I had on this is repair is here.)

When I turn on the TV, I don't get any start-up melody. The screen just dimly flickers around the edges.

Here is what I have checked.
On the power supply board, 14pin connector:
                    1 :12.7 Vdc
                    3 :12.7
                    5 :12.7
                    7 :12.7
                    9 :0
                    11 :5.
                    13 :5....

Looking for help diagnosing a 65" Panasonic Viera TV - TH-65DX700Z (Turns on - Clicks - Turns off)
                    by mostachio
                    Hi Badcaps,

I've had a friend discard a TH-65DX700Z Pansonic Viera Television and I've decided to have a go at repairing it. If possible could I please get some advice in terms of diagnosing the problem so I can purchase the appropriate parts for repair whether it be components, a repair kit or a replacement board. I am happy to post pictures if required.

                    TV Details:

                    Model # - TH-65DX700Z

                    Symptoms:

The television turns on and displays a picture then makes a clicking sound and turns off.

I haven't opened it up yet but...

Lightning Strike: 55" TV dead: is display panel OK?
                    by MrCreosote
                    THE LIGHTNING:
This was a very close strike, blew a 15 amp breaker for all ceiling lights in home AND could smell ozone for a few minutes after strike.

Very close and probably a very strong EMP.

                    THE TV:
No standby LED. Some voltage from PSB (not totally dead).

But found a kit of ALL 4 circuit boards for $55.

At first thought, this will fix my TV.

But then lightning has the ability to totally fry semiconductors. Which would include any or all of the PCBs. However, the display is one big semiconductor and given...
