LG 50PS3000 top half of screen black - Help Please!! Noob alert!

Hi all

The LG 50PS3000 is around 5 years old, working fine from day one with no issues. One night after a few hours of use, the top half of the screen became pixilated and then turned black. The bottom half and audio is perfect.

I have opened up the tv after researching a bit and have ordered and tried replacing the upper Buffer board to no success. Funnily enough once I put the original buffer board back in the top half now works intermittently.

For example...after a cold start the top half starts working after a few minutes. Then it'll go black for 10-30 seconds seconds (sometimes with a random broken up line of pixels, sometimes not) and then back to a full screen for 10-30 seconds.

Any help would be much appreciated! Unfortunately I am new to opening things up and tinkering so please don't be offended by my stupidity.

Before anyone asks I am a complete novice who was extremely proud when changing the HDD on his PS3.

Hi mate, wait for Ali E to chime in he knows about this failure. Its the Ydrive control buffers failing.

There are a lot of threads about this model, search your model number and read the threads, there might be some info their. looks like it could be the ysus, if the upper part of the screen does come up and work sometimes I doubt its a buffer board (ic) problem, they usually fail and don't come back.

Update...had an engineer come in and look (friend of a friend) talking about how the screen needs replacing and the gas has gone from the plasma....possible?

Tried a 3rd buffer board to no effect. So you guys think it's worth getting a second hand Ysus board from eBay to try?

I don't have the tools or knowledge to test it I don't think...unless someone can explain in simple terms.

I've read through other posts already to no avail

The Ydrive is the issue NOT THE BUFFER OR PANEL ! The panels dont wear out like that. Do what I said and run the test patterns if the lines are there likely the Ydrive at fault. To run the test remove the Lvds wire from the Mb and jumper the ext gen pins on the control board then plug the Tv in the patterns will come up.

Update...

I've taken off and reattached the Ysus board...getting impatient with no progress. No difference!

I've attached pics below...could you kindly point out which bits I need to use (and how) to run a test image please.
