Hey Everyone!
I was playing a game on my Xbox connected to my Sony KDL-46ex700 when the tv suddenly turned off. Immediately the Red standby/idle light started blinking 3 times would pause and then repeat itself. (Note I had only been using my TV for about 5 minutes after it was off all night when this occurred so i don't suspect overheating)
What I've tried and the results:
- Turning on the TV with the remote and power button built into the TV. When I try this the TV light turns green for about 3 seconds and I hear a click. The TV light goes back to blinking Red. Now it blinks 7 times in a row before pausing to repeat itself.
- Unplugging the TV from the wall and unplugging the cable from the back of the TV. I've done this waited 25 minutes and plugged it back in only to have the TV go back to blinking 3 times pausing and repeating itself. (It goes back to blinking 7 times if i push the power button and fails to start up)
- I found a service manual and followed the instructions for resetting the TV to factory settings which involves pushing Display + 5 + Volume UP (+) + Power. When I do this the TV stops responding to the power button both on the remote and by pushing the physical power button on the TV) The buttons work again if I unplug the TV and plug it back in) The red light continues to blink.
- I've tried different wall outlets and a surge protector with no results.
- I've flipped the energy saver switch on and off with no change
- I've opened the back of the TV to look for obvious shorts/disconnects but could spot none, nothing smells funny.
I found the following information on the blinking lights and what problems they indicate.
3 Red blinking lights is supposed to mean on a KDL Sony TV that there is a bad main logic, or power board to check for standby volts and if that is okay to replace the main logic board.
7 Red blinking lights is supposed to mean that the main board is overheating, which can be a short on the power board or main logic board.
While i suspect a bad main logic board based off the trouble codes I'm not really sure. Any ideas on where I can go from here to narrow down the problem? I've got a voltmeter if I need to take measurements and will gladly supply photos if needed.
