Pioneer PDP-5060 upper half panel failure

I have a 6G Pioneer plasma, PDP-5060 (panel PDP-506PU). A couple of days ago I had some kind of failure that affects the upper half of the panel. The bottom half is fine, but the upper half is mostly dark with some green. There appear to be some artifacts from what was showing at the time of failure, and if I look closely I can still see some faint traces of the picture updating when a signal is provided. Occasionally here's some flicker in the upper half accompanied by some clicking/buzzing. I was in a different room when the failure occurred so unfortunately I don't know what that looked/sounded like.

Based on my reading so far, I think I've got a problem with either the Y-drive (AWV2258) or scan (B) (AWW1027) boards. Unfortunately, after spending a few hours google searching it appears that these parts are quite difficult to come by these days. I took the back panel off and did not see anything obvious like scorching or bulging capacitors. I'm attaching photos of the Y-drive, scan (B), and power supply boards.

I also included a close up of the connection between Y-drive & scan (B) because I found a random post on another site with the following claim:
"There's a little 0 ohm resistor to the right of Y2 at position F2401 that comes desoldered causing the top half to not get the proper voltage. Resolder it and you're golden."

This is my first post here, I hope I've followed directions properly. If more pictures are necessary please let me know. I've been building/fixing computers for years so I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, however I don't have much experience with soldering. I desperately want to get my TV functioning again because I use the cablecard with PIP all the time and it's just not possible to do this anymore with new TVs. Any advice/assistance would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, after a bit of google searching I was able to find a PDF of the PDP-506PU service manual (doc ARP3267) but not the PCB diagram (doc ARP3268).

That resistor does look bad. If I were you I would remove it entirely and replace it with a blob of solder. (You can do this as the zero ohm resistor is just a substitute for a direct electrical connection. Using a zero ohm resistor gives the manufacturer optionality, they can change the design without having to re-make the PCB masks.)

Tom, thanks for the reply. Just to verify, are we talking about what I've circled in red in this picture?

What is the recommended procedure for removing the resistor? I don't currently have any soldering equipment, what do you suggest I purchase?

A basic soldering iron will remove that no problem.
Just flood it with fresh solder and slide it off.

          Yes. That part.

You could test it using a digital multimeter. It should read very low on the 200 ohm range. Less than 3 ohms. Make sure power is off while you test on ohms.

            Success!

It took me a few days to order all of the necessary soldering gear. I watched a bunch of youtube videos about SMT soldering, then I practiced removing resistors and replacing them with solder on an old VGA card. Once I was satisfied with my results on the practice board I replaced the 0 ohm resistor in the panel (see pic). Now everything is working as expected. Thanks to all who took time to respond.

Big kudos to W0lverine and tom66 for this thread! Turns out my friend had the exact same problem and we fixed it up with the advice here. No way we would have figured this out without your help. THANKS!!!!

                  Hi,

I've got a PDP-506PE with the same trouble ( green video in top half of plasma display).

                  1. Is there a chance that this fix works for my 506PE too ?

                  2. AWW1027 is impossible to find now. Is it possible to fix the problem with changing only the AWV2258 ?

                  Thanks.

The PDP-506PE and PDP-506PU got the same manual service.
I hope the fix will work.

Hi Folks, I have the same exact problem with my Pioneer PRO-1130HD tv. I hope that the fix is the same for me. I have attached a couple of pictures. If anyone can tell me if my problem is the resistor, R2401 please let me know or if you are able to notice a different problem from my two pictures. Thanks!!!

Yes, the resistor looks failed on your unit, so replacing it with a blob of solder as described above should work fine.

Re: Pioneer PDP-5060 upper half panel failure

After an illness that sidelined me for awhile, I am getting back to fixing this problem.

I bought all the soldering equipment and practiced desoldering and soldering on an old cassette player that I bought at a garage sale for a buck.
I thought that I was good to go, but looking at that little resistor I had a couple of questions before proceeding because I did not want to mess the whole thing up.
1). Do I need to remove the circuit board from the tv in order to work with the resistor from both sides? (Ugh, big job!)
                                or
2). Can I simply heat up the resistor with the soldering iron and when the solder melts pull it out with a tweezer? And then put a glob over solder as suggested in this forum.
                                or
3). Should I place a glob of solder on the resistor and then heat up the solder-covered resistor with the soldering iron and then pull it out with a tweezer? And then put a glob over solder as suggested in this forum.)
                                or
4). Should I simply heat a glob of solder over the resistor? Would the connection be made?

I am hesitating not only because of my inexperience, but I was wondering that after I pull out the resistor how does the glob of solder make the connection. I guess it must. because that was not mentioned in the discussion.

Once again, I truly appreciate any help.

A soldering iron looks as though it will do the job. Since it's soldered on the top side and if you have easy access to the resistor/fuse then you would not need to remove any boards.
Willing to help but I'm no expert.

Hallelujah! Success! Months later and I finally completed the job.
I removed the resistor which kind of crumbled off on its own and then tried to put the glob of solder there while the tv was on a stand. Of course gravity did not allow it to work. I was very worried about burning the surrounding components with the soldering iron so gave them a little protection from my unsteady hand and wrapped them some masking tape. Once I laid the tv flat, shone a bright light on the board and had my cousin hold a magnifying glass over it, it went very smoothly. A nice clean glob of solder closed the gap. Tested it with a multimeter. Put the tv in a vertical position and screwed in the back cover. I could not have been happier when I turned on the tv and the image was whole and perfect!
I cannot thank you guys enough who have the expertise and helped here. You realize that you saved me a couple of thousand bucks which what it would have cost to buy the OLED tv that I had in mind. Awesome!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!

good night! I have this screen that looks half black and half white. the tcon gives a low vgh value (5-6v). the rest seem fine. I first removed the flex from one half of the panel and then the other. Removing the left, vgh increases it to 25-26v. I think the problem is in that area, but there are not many elements on the integrated controller board. there are no shorted capacitors. could they be a cof? Some help?

By the way, now the entire screen is black. Maybe some flex was not connected correctly... I have exchanged the flex and there are no variations, I don't think they are the...

Pioneer's passive component naming convention is clear to me. For example, CSZA R22M 35 is tantalum, radial leads, 0.22uF, 20%, 35V.

BUT there are two capacitors on the board which have actual Pioneer part numbers: PCL-042. I can tell they are 0.1uF, 16V but don't...

Panasonic 50VT65 Sparkling/misfiring pixels upper half of screen
                                      by skyvalley99
Recently my VT65 has started exhibiting sparking/misfiring pixels, it manifests as sparkling white pixels in the black area if there's brighter pixels in the same horizontal area (e.g. the smart viera boot screen, white credits on a black background).

On inspecting the screen closley you can see pixels misfiring in the upper area of the screen at all time, it just gets lost in normal content.

I've tried (without success) replacing the P/SS/SC board (refurbished boards) and re-calibrating the VSUS (including setting it to HIGH) but none has made a difference.
