A basic analog scope will work to see if there's a signal there - you won't be able to see exactly what it is though. LVDS is high speed, usually 250MHz+ per pair. But the general amplitude of the signals can reveal that a main board is working. For example one one set I had, I pressed the MENU key and could see the signal change on the scope, which told me the main board was probably working.

I would use the 100mV/div range and 1ms/div or faster. The trigger can be set to LINE and AUTO, which will automatically trigger at the mains frequency.

      Hi all
Latest update on this set ( First though a big thank you to Tom66/budm for all their patients and help with these faults.)
I am pleased to say this set is now working as it should do with a perfect picture.
After all the tests and measurements carried out with the help from Tom66 and budm I decided to order a replacement T-CON board it was a frustrating week to wait for a replacement but when it arrived i installed it and the picture returned to the set.
The question i am now wandering is does any one know how you could check these T-CON boards so you could be sure it had failed ? Tom you also gave me some help on measuring for signals from main board using a oscilloscope I do think now that my old scope is not really much help with these LCD/PLASMA type TV's And really think i should look for a more up to date digital type scope, Does any one have a input on this for me? ie: what would be suitable does it need to be a certain size in MHz or are these type that connect to laptop any good ? any pointers would be much appreciated of course cost would play a big part in a replacement.

Laptop/USB scopes are no go for me, I find them generally too limited. The best scope you can buy right now is a Rigol DS1054Z which is available for around £300 inc VAT. It's a 50MHz digital scope. I have the DS1074Z myself which is 70MHz. But, the scopes can all be upgraded via entering a hidden key in - a sort of "hack" which will unlock extra features. This turns them in to 100MHz scopes, 24Mpt memory and unlocks a vast array of extra trigger functions. Very useful.

Testing the T-con would involve checking the LVDS pairs, a digital scope would be extremely useful for this due to the play/pause ability and deep memory (DS1054Z has 24Mpt of memory, which is HUGE.)

They're brand new and in high demand, so the price is likely to remain that high for a while.
If you're after a budget option the DS1052E ain't bad, but it's still around £200 - you wouldn't regret the extra £100 for all the additional features.

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
              by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 - no power
              by PantherDave
              Hi all!

I'm trying to troubleshoot a Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 that won't power on. Motherboard model is M1007506-015. My priority is retrieving data, but the SSD is integrated so it looks like if I can't repair it it'll need to go to a data recovery company. I've done a little basic board repair before, but nothing this advanced until now. So please forgive my ignorance in advance. 😅

I found the boardview for this laptop in the forums here, and am able to open it on my PC with FlexBV.

              Asus Probook P5440UF-XB74 power issue
              by GLISIT
              Hi all,

TL;DR - this laptop is driving me nuts with the oddball power-related behaviors. Appreciate any insight you can provide!

I'm experiencing a power issue on an Asus Probook P5440UF-XB74. Although I've worked with electronics and computers for decades, this is my first attempt at getting into motherboard-level component troubleshooting. Any help the community can provide is greatly appreciated!

A few weeks ago I was using the laptop (on battery power) for a Zoom meeting. The battery was running very low (long meeting) but I wasn't worried about...

Power supply Manson NTP-5561 (5661) LCD controller dead - PIC18F87K90 HEX dump required
              by Andreas_de
              Hello!

i got a damaged Manson NTP-5561 (60V, 1,6A DC output) and and the main issue is that the controler IC for the LCD display has a short. The controler IC PIC18F87K90 is mounted on the back of the back of the LCD. Vss-Vdd = 3 Ohm. The 5V and 3,3V power line was killed as well, but that is not a problem. A new LDO 3,3V and 5V 7805 is already ordered.
Replacing the PIC18F87K90 is necessary but that makes no sense without having the HEX dump of the new controler.

Does anybody have such a power supply and could do a HEX dump of the Flash and EEPROM memory?

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply
              by sam_sam_sam
I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...
