    Panasonic TX-P42S30B - 6 blinks

    Panasonic TX-P42S30B - 6 blinks

I bought this 2011 model in early 2012 and we use it for around 2-3 hours daily; no problems at all.

The other day, when using the SD card feature (a rare event) the tv powered itself off.

Now when switching on I get 3 clicks (relay?) from the Power board followed by 6 blinks from the LED on the front of the tv followed by another click.

I followed the ShopJimmy diagnostic video for this tv which pointed to a failure in the Main"A" board.

I bought a used A-board online which was said to be ok. I fitted it today but I get exactly the same response.

Any ideas how I should proceed?

    Kind regards,

    Mike

You have to watch some of those videos, i think they can be incomplete but 6 blink I'd consider A board as rare and never seen A board cause 6.

SN would be prime suspect. If you have a multimeter and can check for shorts ,look for 30F131 transistors and see if shorted out.

this is a repair kit to give an idea what to look at, again no certainty that's it just these items but the transistors do blow

Thanks TW2005, I will try to find out how to check for shorts in the transistors you mention.

I guess I liked the logic behind the diagnostic that suggested isolating the SN board and seeing if the 6 blink remained. I tried this and it did. Doesn't this point to the SN board being ok OR , is isolating the board just another way of creating a 6 blink code?

And thanks for the link to the ShopJimmy SN repair pack.

Will start researching Shorting tonight, I'm new to all this but have a multimeter and the desire to learn.

would have to check the fault tree for these. But I think find evidence first before getting anymore boards just in case I'm wrong.
Don't have exact guide for S30, which cables did you disconnect for the isolation?

a short is zero resitance or very low ohms, often the transistor will be dead short but can go low in ohms too

Thanks, which terminals on the Transistor should I be checking between?

                    Re: Panasonic TX-P42S30B - 6 blinks

Ok, looking at the 30F 131 transistors, they appear to have just two terminals soldered to the board so I guess it's those.

Is it ok to use my analogue multimeter or do I need a digital one?

The transistor tab, the fat pin at the other end, is also electrically important, so check to that as well.

I seem to recall disconnecting bad SN on my TX-P42U30B caused a 6 red code. Could have been 7.

Check and see if you have a little green LED light up on your SN and then go out, that is a common sign of a faulty ERC circuit.

Thanks Tom, I don't get a green led, or any other light. Although there is a red one on the A board.

Two or three questions about testing the transistors for shorts:

                        1. Can I do it without removing them from the circuit, and

                        2. Can I use an analogue multimeter?

                        3. Also, since they seem to have 4 tabs, should I try every combination?

                          1. Yes
                          2. Yes, on the lowest ohm range, look for the needle swinging far right. Other tests WILL require a digital meter (an inexpensive £10 one is sufficient as long as it is capable of 300VDC measurement or more)
                          3. The middle, disconnected pin is internally electrically connected to the large tab, so you do not need to test that as well.

So I was looking at the guide for a ST series and it suggests with the 3 white ribbons disconnected from the A it should turn on and stay on, black screen

But you say this gives 6 blink and if you do this test again with the new board is it 6 blink?

Try this, remove those 3 ribbons at the A board, disconnect SN2, SS11 and P35 and try again and tell me what happens.

Don't reconnect for 5 mins especially p35 or you can spike the boards and panel. P35 is the main concern

Thanks, I agree, that's the first step of the ShopJimmy video disconnect those 3 ribbon cables. Black screen/On = SN board failure.

Am walking the dog at present, will do the stuff you suggest shortly.

Btw, I take it that when testing the 30F131, I should turn off the AC.

most definitely, nothing on and have it unplugged. you need to be aware of "HOT" side of the PSU or what can kill if it's plugged in and on at the mains!

                                    Thanks, I'll be careful.

Firstly to confirm that I redid the test with new A board with and without it's 3 ribbon cables. Still the same, 6 blinks.

Ok I disconnected the connectors and cables you mentioned.

When I powered on, I got the usual 3 clicks in the power supply followed by 20 blinks (the 20th slightly longer than the rest - followed by a short gap then 6 blinks (the last of which was not technically a blink as it stayed on. Presumably power stayed on as no relay click.

yeah, this is getting weird. Good question, keep forgetting you guys have the same setup as us. Green - go, red - no go. US just has red

the other thing too, once it goes sos , it just keeps repeating in red the blink code until it's shutdown
