curtis lcd2425a in standby, no screen, sound or menu

hello kind people. i was recently gifted a curtis lcd tv model lcd2425a. i was told that it worked & that it just needed a remote. so i plug it in and the red standby light comes on. i look for a power button but do not find one. i press the standby, menu, volume, channel, and source buttons on the unit but get no image or light displayed on the screen, nor do i hear any sounds at all when i put my ear to it.
i purchased a new universal remote and followed the instructions to program the code for curtis lcd tvs that was supplied with the remotes package. multiple times the remote responds as if it was successfully programmed but still there is no response from the tv when any button is pressed on the remote or on the unit.
turning the lights off in the room failed to show any signs of illumination. nor did shining a flashlight into the front or into the back thru the air vents reveal any image. there is only the persistant solid red standby light to give me any impression that the unit is still alive.
i apologize, as i do not own a camera to take & upload pictures of the unit.
thinking maybe the unit has to have an input attached to wake itself i attached my laptop to it thru a vga cable. the winxp laptop recognized that it was attached to a duel monitor setup when i then checked display properties, calling it "generic television". i enabled 'extend my windows desktop onto this monitor'. alas, altho the laptop recognized it was connected to the tv, no attempt to drag items onto the secondary deskspace or any other configuration from the laptop produced any sound, image, or light on the tv.
could it be that the unit will not work with universal remotes even tho the user manual i downloaded for the unit gives a code for universal remotes? i see that there are $30 universal remotes that claim to work for my specific model available. i also see that i can supposedly send $15 directly to the manufacturer in toronto for a replacement remote.
does anyone know if i have to have a remote to power on this unit? it seems to me that even if i had no remote i should be able to manually press the menu button on the unit to get an OSD screen at least. again, no response from any buttons on the unit. thank you for your time.

Most TVs will turn on when the buttons on the TV, especially one marked STANDBY, is pressed.

So, I would suspect a fault with the TV.

Does the TV use an external power pack (like one for a laptop), or does it connect directly to mains power. If it uses an external power pack, is that the original one, and is it working ok?

im suspicious of bad internals as well. it will probably be my first time working inside a screen so its kind of an adventure just trying to get it to work. so thank you.
no it doesnt have its own power pack. it has the kind of power connector for a powercord like u find on the back of any computer tower. and its definately getting at least some power thru it as evidenced by the constantly on red standby light.

Ok, do you have a digital multimeter? You will need it to do diagnosis/tests. They are quite cheap, $10 for a suitable basic one.

thank you. i do not at the moment but i will go to the hardware store & get a multimeter tonight. is it possible to short cirquits inside the tv to take it out of standby?
is anyone familiar with this particular model? my friend who gave it to me says that it is not uncommon for newer tvs to have no functionality without a remote. not to show a menu screen when i push the menu button on the unit tho seems to be a red flag.

ok, i took it apart & found no "smoking Gun" as it were: no obvious bad caps or damage to the boards on the inside. so i guess im gonna wait for the replacement remote i sent off for from curtis international ltd in toronto. maybe it HAS to function with it to wake up from standby mode?
multimeter achieved btw. thank you good people

sounds like the main board isn't turning on the power supply. You can unplug the power supply from all the boards and force jumper the power supply on with a 1k resistor and check to see if it is in order. Other that that you'd have to figure out why the main board is no sending an "on" signal.

                thank you for helping.
Force jumper the powersupply on? forgive me as i iam a novice. does that mean like shorting pins on the motherboard of a pc? i see how i can disconnect the power supply board from the other components but im not quite sure how to do the rest of what u say.
so u mean that even tho there is power getting through to the red standby light that the power supply could still be faulty? i did note to myself that the power supply, or anything else for that matter, made no hum or sound at all when i plugged it in with the panels separated.

so curtis international was very prompt in mailing me a replacement remote. much more prompt than i have been at replying to this thread. the short answer is that the tv fired right up with one touch of the factory ordered remote control, whereas i couldnt get any response from a new universal remote. & its working fine. who woulda thunk?
                  i learned so much...thank u
