Philips PF42 plasma TV no sound/no picture

    Hello badcaps.net

To introduce myself a little, I'm a Applied physics student who has followed a small course with an introduction to electronics, so I have the basics down. However I'm a complete noob in TV electronics, all I read was the thread about Plasma TV troubleshooting.

We bought a new television, so this TV is mine.

We've had this plasma TV for around 10 years, and as it's age grew it shown more and more problems. At first it sometimes would only show picture in black and white. Now it's most recent problem is, that when I somtimes turn it on it will show no picture. Just blackness + the backlight? Or Picture but no sound. Or any combination of this, thus no sound and no picture, no picure but sounds works, no sound but there is picture but it's B/W, etc.... Sometimes everything works, but it's way too much trouble to keep unplugging let the caps discharge and replug it, to see if any of the 3 combinations do not occur.

Today I opened it up and saw that 2 caps next to each other had something oozing out of them, these caps went bad for sure. I'm going to replace them tomorrow, as the shops aren't opened anymore here.

My question is, might other stuff like y-buffer z-buffer also be needing replacement? Note I did kinda check the fuse, I have no idea how so I just set it to the setting that will peep when the parts are "connected" . The normal impedance setting didn't work for me as I couldn't get it to show more than 0 ohms. But with that sound wave like picture setting, I checked that all fuses were OK?

Another question is, this model has also an version that has more/better inputs. Is it possible to swap boards or something so I could have more inputs?
The bad caps are near the numbered 50, right from the 50, down below next to the coil.
    For example this one :

Mine only has RCA, and the picture has option for component video. I'd also like more pixels as this is quite an old plasma panel, but that isn't possible

You must post pictures of the leaking caps and boards inside your TV and not post picture of somebody else's TV, if you want people here to help

Even if it's the same TV?
Here is my tv, leaking caps has been changed by some random brand, because I wanted them fast. KSC is the brand 3300uf 10v. 2$ a piece, kind of rip off..

here is my tv with the old caps

Your picture is out of focus and off site- please retake and repost using manage attachments so it appears as a thumbnail and not inline.
REASON - when pics drop of IMGUR thread will make no sense to others seeking help

Have you done the tests in the thread you read - does set glow in the dark
have you removed leads to ysus zsus in turn and together.
To test a fuse set you meter on ohms 200 and probe to each side of fuse
result should be the same as touching the probes together.

Have a look around shopjimmy to see what boards are suitable for your set.
Please upload pictures using attachment function when ask for help on the repair

Re: Philips PF42 plasma TV no sound/no picture

It's a nothing fancy multimeter with auto ranging, so that's not possible. Fuse should be okay as I can turn the TV on.

Well I put the caps in and seems something in the x-main has burnt now... I think I'll just RIP or if it's possible ill order a new chip. Did it burn ,because i put some elcheapo caps (bought for 2$ a piece though) in there? Shouldn't be as Samsung themselves put obsolete Samwha WB series in there themselves. And the Caps themselves look fine...

Sadly better than that isn't possible for my phone.
The burnt chip is U4002 no idea whether it's a transistor or IC chip, not too knowledgable in this.

[edit]As for the reason why this IC chip(quite sure now) burned is because I disconnected the X-main and left it on the PDP display, which acts as an ground and it somehow shorted? Now I plugged it back in and the burning does not continue, so all I need is to replace this chip.
Anyone a idea which one it is?

Unlikely, but if you plan to fix the TV you should replace the caps you put in with something better - Samwha's are actually much better quality than them. With the KSC capacitors, you are lucky if you get six moths of use out of them.

                That is just fine because I ordered 2 ELNA 16V 3300uF 16V RJ4.
Now I just need to change the burned chip.
Anyone an idea what I should order?

Best guess is IRS21867S, was thinking IRS2184S but pin 1 looks like it could be Vcc, and 4 gnd . What's U5001,5002 on the Ymain? they look like they could be IRS2184S

Unless someone has a board to look at, I can't find a photo clear enough. probably more than just the driver IC that's blown.

Re: Philips PF42 plasma TV no sound/no picture

I was able to lend a camcorder from my brother I will make a new picture for now I got more lighting up and got a better picture with my phone.
                    [edit]
got some high quality shots now

                    [edit2]
got the requested y main chips, took a while to find them haha.
Also can anyone confirm that an IC chip burns when you leave the connector on the pdp display? It's the onliest reason I can think of.

Well I had picture when i turned on, just the screen wasn't looking that good. The colors lost its vividness(blue was the same blue but some darkness mixed in) so everything had a layer of shadow over it. Then I smelled something burning when I turned the TV on so something must've went wrong.

                    [edit3]
So it's an IR2106S, data sheets look similar to your best guess.
