Tried everything to get the convergence ICs off the heatsink but no luck thus far. Would it be easier to just remove the heat sinks or does anyone have another idea.

What set is this from ? I recently drilled two 1/4" holes through the bottom of an LG Zsus to gain access to the screws holding the heatsink on the stk module. Came off easy after that but I would imagine you need to be real careful about where you're drilling

its from a hitachi 42" rear projection tv. The heat sink looks easy enough to remove.Comment

The heat transfer compound is gluing it to the heat sink. remove the solder on the pins, and make sure they are completely free. Or you can cut the pins off. Then I used a screwdriver and a small hammer and broke it loose. Then clean the heat sink (i use denatured alchol) put dew coumpound on and re-install the chip.Comment

Use a thin flat blade screwdriver or a knife and stick between the heat sink and the ic, start near a corner not the middle of the ic. It should pop off. (you did remove the 2 screws right.. just checking)Comment

Yesterday I successfully repaired a Middle Atlantic UPS2200R-IP that had inadvertently been used as a surge suppressor at our transmitter site. It has already been replaced with an updated one but it's coming home with me now instead of being e-cycled. To be specific, this is the MA model that has the blue backlit display and has been discontinued, although this design may have been used in many UPS units including the smaller Middle Atlantic ones in this series.

I have peltir element glued to heatsink with something thick and sticky like putty... it cant be separate with force or heat without risk of breaking ceramic or damaged semiconductor layers due to force (eg if try twisted, pulled, lifted)... method that I am using is a single thread for needle (thin and firm thread of pure polyester that cant break with bare hands without glowes), and using it like a saw between heatsink and peltir. I holding a heatsink with knee against table. It slowly cut throug putty and release glued parts. It is slow proces, but preserve undamaged component and heatsink....

Hello, I have a System76 Gazelle laptop (model gaze14) which now only partially powers on and does not boot properly.
History:
This laptop has served me well for a few years. It's always been a bit noisy with the fans and recently became much more so on both fans, where just opening a vim/notepad session would cause the fans to spin up loudly and make a grating sound, like the ball bearing were mechanically wearing out.
