Samsung PS51D450 dead no power - bad main board

Got this one cheap, 51" 720p plasma, 2011 model. Was expecting bad X-main or Y-main by description but then found it is completely dead. No power light, PSU has 5.3V standby, PSON is HIGH and main voltages from PSU are not active (this is OK, it is active LOW on Samsung PSU.)

Ran test patterns panel is perfect, had slight pink tint on full white raster so upped Vs on PSU to 212V (rated 205V) which got rid of that.

Main board seems reasonably obtainable and cheap, so will probably end up swapping that in, but would be interested if anyone knows of another solution or if this is a common problem.

      BN94-04349D
      X9 PDP 51" 450 XU

Printed on side connector for CI/PCIMIA slot

The board is about £15 on eBay so I'm not too worried but none of them are tested, would prefer to get a tested one.

If you have a PS51D490 main board & 3D transmitter I might be able to convert this to a 3D TV

OK... Crazy idea. Only difference between this and PS51D495 (3D version) is the main board and Bluetooth 3D transmitter. I've never done a 3D TV but it sounds like I can convert this one for about £8 (cost of transmitter, the main board is same cost)

              I bought the main board.

This upgrades the TV from SD Freeview, 2 HDMI, 2D only to HD Freeview, 3 HDMI and 3D capable. Needs bluetooth TX and a pair of glasses to completely work, will update on progress.

Re: Samsung PS51D450 dead no power - bad main board

The board I am getting has a plastic side panel included, which has space for the extra HDMI.

Well, the 3D upgrade is possible and the TV works too.

My experience of the 3D is - underwhelming - it's barely noticeable on most content :/ I think this is typical of most 3D displays. I expected it to be far more noticeable but it really is only barely noticeable... plus the image is dimmed by the glasses... meh.

Also gives TV a Freeview HD tuner and extra HDMI port.

                      To upgrade:
                      • Replace main board with: BN94-04891P (get one with plastic bracket included)
                      • Cut hole for ethernet port
                      • Install bluetooth transmitter: BN96-17107A

                      And it's a good'n!

Thanks to Sordids for supplying transmitter, arrived same day as main board.

Re: Samsung PS51D450 dead no power - bad main board

So I only just got a look at this panel in a dark room. It is full of maldischarge! For a 2011 Samsung panel, come on Samsung!! I had to tweak some of the settings to get rid of it.

I upped Vs to 217V from 205V which is just outside Samsung's "tweaking range" of +/-10V, I don't expect any harm to come from this. This increase in Vs resolved the pink tint to white, and uneven look of white. In 2D it was OK at 212V but 3D needed the extra 5V. I left Vsc at -187V. I lowered Ve from 86V to 81V, adjusted Yrr to 11 o'clock, and Yfr to 4 o'clock. The panel maldischarge is now gone. There are no sparklies on 3D content, unlike before.

And to answer the question: in 3D mode, it halves the subfield count from 10 to 5, so each eye sees 5 subfields. The dithering does work surprisingly well though - with the glasses on, it looks identical to 2D. Which is quite an achievement. Unfortunately the rest of the 3D is very "meh".

3d using lcd glasses is about 30years old, i could have told you it's crap.
and if you stick with it, you will get a headache and temporary vision problems when you take the glasses off while your brain "re-calibrates"

LCD or passive, 3D TV is generally rubbish.

passive 3d is actually damned good with material designed for it,
i'v seen it at a trade show - but it has never gone on sale afaik.

it uses a lense-plate over the screen with vertical "V" grooves in it that line up with the pixels.

it alternates left and right frames between odd and even pixels giving a 3d image to anybody infront of it in a range of about 20ft.

it was intended for marketing in shop windows and poster-boards.

Passive 3D with glasses is implemented in most LED-LCD TVs with 3D. Only high end LED-LCD TVs and plasmas use active 3D. In theory should work better - but needs a lot more light to do so.

Auto-stereographic 3D as you are talking about has been demonstrated many times previously. But it has the big limitation that you have to look at it basically dead on for it to work.

I think this un55c6400 I have can do 3D if I upgrade parts. The service menu has a ton of options for 3D. I have a un55ES7100f for 3D and it does it quite well.

                                  Awesome upgrade though!

Is the PDP panel you did this too got a NTSC/us model or is it the same for euro as well?

Re: Samsung PS51D450 dead no power - bad main board

My PDP is marked NTSC/PAL which means it supports 48Hz (film doubler), 50Hz and 60Hz drive. Most plasma panels nowadays will support both modes, so a US model should also be NTSC/PAL. I think only the really old ones had trouble with supporting different modes. The reason is the priming waveforms have to change for different refresh rates, so if the panel hasn't been properly adjusted for both frame rates, maldischarge can occur.

As for upgrading LED-LCD TVs, the trouble is there are often 3D optimised panels. Not all panels will support raw 120Hz video in (to be upconverted to 240Hz with FRC.) The only way to be sure is to make sure the same panel and T-con are used in both TVs.
