HELP PLS! Anyone repaired a Panasonic Viera TV?

Specifically I am looking for help getting my set working again.

If you have ever replaced a main board, did you run into problems after the fact?

Has anyone used a main board with the same board part number from a different size TV to fix yours?

What should one do when they can not copy the firmware setting from their old main board to load into a new board? I assume the service mode settings are also carried over in a setting copy. Where can I get a copy of the service mode settings for my TV model TC-P42ST30?

Probably have more questions but this is a start along with the thread located here https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?p=439484 . This thread describes the exact thing I am also dealing with and trying to solve.

This old US Marine says thanks in advance!

The different panel size boards are NOT compatible. You must use the same size unless you are prepared to swap over the "flash" chips, which store the main board's personality, so to speak. These are fairly small surface mount ICs.

Thank you tom66, I suspected this might be a problem (why I mentioned it). Lcky for me the mismatched board was picked up for a very small amt of money. I have done SMT replacement before and this will be a good project to prepare for the next time my main board goes south.

I have a chance to pick up boards and parts for a complete TV inexpensively. What I do not use will be placed in the needed later box if I get all the boards (causing me to reconsider a bit). We get a lot of lightning in Tampa, Fl and I would bet something will soon go south again. Might be worth paying for the electric co. the zap cap system since they pay for replacement or repairs when needed instead of stocking repair parts now. Big decision to make!

I bet mismatched boards to TV model was the same reason "milkrocks" had problems with the TV he worked on. Too bad he didn't tell us about those A board details, would be nice to know especially for others running across his thread as I did.

Zap cap, I heard about that. Did you know it doesn't cover anything using "microchip or transistor technology"... in other words, pretty much anything "electronic"...

Most damaging surges don't come from the power line, but rather are induced into the sensitive HDMI or cable line inputs, or direct strike into a cable system.

Hey I can help you a little bit. Some boards are compatible but very few. You need to write down your panel sticker number. Enter that number into the search of shopjimmy. Find the A boards that pop up. I have a Panasonic that required an AP and couldn't find one anywhere. Shopjimmy search gave me an AR and an AT. Although my model wasn't listed on the AT and AR page, the AT board worked perfectly.

Data copy has nothing to do with firmware or service mode. All it will do is copy your personalised settings and channel presets. if you tell us what mainboard you have purchased in place of the 42ST30 we can probably work out what needs swapping.

part number and revision suffix of both boards would be helpful. I have converted a 50" new Zealand board to an Australian 42" doing the eeprom swap however there is one flash chip that is particularly challenging and you may stuff the board up in the process but with out more information i won't know what chips you need to swap.

Re: HELP PLS! Anyone repaired a Panasonic Viera TV?

Swap SPI Flash chip IC9304, If you'd used a 50" or lower board this would have been the same. I expect this one if any will correct the panel issue.

I would make one change at a time and test, starting with IC9304.

Remove 1 chip at a time and place in antistatic bag, label with TV Model, IC number so things don't get mixed up if you need to reverse the changes.

If that fixed all your image issues, I would leave IC8902 and test the features mentioned below. If there were still issues, swap IC8902 and do self-check.

              Re-test TV.

I don't know enough to help you much more, all experimental really.

EEPROM IC8902 is specific for each model, there may be an issue swapping this one. read section 5 of your manual. You could try the swap and do the self check and see if it writes a new KEY to it , otherwise you may have to order a replacement and then do the self check to write a new key.

5.1. Specification of KEY for DTCP-IP, WMDRM and Widevine
              5.1.1. General information:

              1. EEPROM (IC8902) for spare parts has the seed of KEY for each DTCP-IP for DLNA, WMDRM for Netflix and Widevine for
              CinemaNow.

              2. The final KEY data will be generated by Peaks IC (IC8000) when SELF CHECK was done and are stored in both Peaks IC
              (IC8000) and EEPROM (IC8902).

              5.1.2. Replacement of ICs:
When Peaks IC is replaced, EEPROM should be also replaced with new one the same time.
When EEPROM is replaced, Peaks IC is not necessary to be replaced the same time.
After the replacement of IC, SELF CHECK should be done to generate the final KEY data.
How to SELF CHECK: While pressing [VOLUME ( - )] button on the main unit, press [MENU] button on the remote control for
              more than 3 seconds.
TV will be forced to the factory shipment setting after this SELF CHECK.

I understand about data copy, RE: my models service manual there is a board replacement copy but I suspect it only copies svc mode, hotel, and user settings (not any set specific non changeable data). The replacement copy process requires a password and a file specifically named "boardreplacement.pwd" be created on the SD memory card used.

The board I used as a replacement is from a 65 inch Panasonic model number TC-65PST34 with suffix of "AH". My TV is a model TC-P42ST30 uses Panasonic part [PCB TXN/A1PEUUS CIRCUIT BOARD A (RTL)PAVCA TNPH0912 1A MAIN AV INPUT,PROCESSING BOARD]. The manufacturing part number of both boards is TNPH0912 1A. The suffix of my board is "nil" and the 65 inch board suffix is "AH".

If you can isolate the chips that need to be changed, I am up to the task as long as it can be accomplished with SMT soldering tools (isolated temp controlled soldering iron with tiny SMT tips). I have done a fair amount of this before along with fine wire through-hole board repairs on SMT boards with torn or burned pads to complete circuits. I am not equipped to do any kind of Vapor phase, infrared, or hot gas convection reflow work that is needed for entire boards and some of the larger SMT IC's. BGA's are a pain, so I stay completely away from them unless it is the last resort.

My purchased service manual PFD, is not real clear when enlarged to see the block diagrams, I haven't tried printing it prior to viewing yet.

I also read your last post, fortunately those IC's are giants in the world of SMT. Much easier to work with then the smaller lead IC's.

Yes they are a piece of cake, I just flowed solder across both side and use 2 soldering irons to heat both sides at once to get them off. just watch out for any tiny SMD bits nearby. I had a near miss and took a tiny resistor moving one lucky i realised and it was still stuck to the tip.

if you understand data copy then you also understand board replacement copy because that's all that is. It's for when a tech replaces the mainboard so it can be setup exactly how it was with all the user settings and channels previously stored.

It won't help you at all with making the board configured for a 42".

yeah unfortunately 2011 on the PDF manuals are no good for zooming, most annoying for anyone who wants to get down to that level.

it'll be interesting to see how you go because although I managed to do this I ended up with display issues and I don't know if it's the work I did or SN,SS or C boards.

I hope it does work because it's a clever fix if you pull it off.

I am 100% with you on this. That is why I have the correct board coming in for my tv make, and model on 23-apr-2014. The worst that could happen with the new board (assuming it works perfectly as stated by seller) is I may need to re-calibrate.

If it does require calibration I am going to see if I can get it done using ISF technology. Now that I am dabbling into TV's again this is looking more and more like a worthwhile self supporting hobby. AN EXCUSE TO RE_BUILD MY ELECTRONICS SHOP AGAIN. I have to get past the wifes vetos, and that requires incoming $$, persistance, and rewards for the lady in the adventure. Here we go and hopefully a story with a HAPPY ENDING!

Oh, ok so you've found the right board. So you've given up on swapping chips on the 65" board?

Oh no, I haven't given up on swapping chips (sorry I left that thought). I just want to insure that the TV is working to correct standards. Sadly, or fortunately I am ONE OF THOSE CRITICAL VIDEO BUFFS.

Once I know my troubles are fixed, with the new board on wednesday, I will remove the new board and put in the board we have discussed with the swapped IC's. I would do this now but I am still watching my shows in 2D -> 3D simulation and I am also taking a little time to think this through.

The picture is nearly perfect in 3D mode all the wash out and darkened blacks have vanished. Strange I see a horrid picture in 2D mode when 3D works so well but that's the way it is.

I'll just tweak the contrast and colour up... ah... yeah... people don't look orange any more. OK, looks good to me.
Probably should calibrate when I find a Kuro, though, would be a bit of a shame not to do at least basic calibration.

I'm a good sport and gotya, you may have a point. Less than top quality may not be worth the expense of calibration.

I found a never opened new in box 65 inch KURO for just over $3,500.00 locally on Craigslist, too bad I don't have the pocket change for it. Would make a great computer monitor. :-)

I thought I would update you, I received my shipments late yesterday, one was ok and the other turned out to be a case full of HOT WHEELS. Now I am in the process of sending the HOT WHEELS to the right buyer and he is sending my boards to me.

It was an honest mistake, the seller has refunded both buyers for the postage and trouble for shipping. Looks like I can;t start anything until Saturday or this coming Monday 28-Apr-2014.

OK. I am back with news that the new card arrived and completely resolved all my problems.

I will also post this info in another thread dealing with the exact same symptoms and repairs I had previsouly made. It should be the definitive answer for that thread.

As for swapping of flash IC's, I am going to dive into that very soon.

I thought I would hold off a bit on this since things were working so well but I do need to re-calibrate this set or SWAP the PEAKS EEPROM IC8902 to get back all my original service mode picture settings.

The Peaks EEPROM is the flash IC that contains the picture settings, as verified in the service manual under "Measurements and Adjustments" section 9 PP-28. I bet that should fix the problem I had with the 65 inch TV board I originally had in my 42 in set.

IC8902 is the chip I will start with, a nice big DIP IC a blind person like me can actually see.

A question for you - I got hit by lightning, any idea what may have been taken out on my original A-Board (the set would not power up at all afterward - no lights blinking or lit)? Seemed like I should ask since you have most likely already run up against this same scenario. Sure would like to salvage the original A-board.

I am going to take a look again at the EEPROM EDITOR in the SVC-TOOL display. It appears it can be used to edit all the values on the PEAKS EEPROM. I would first attempt that but unfortunately I do not have a hard copy of the data from the bad board.

No my only experience with an A board was a 1 blinker, corrupted EEPROM. My TV suffered a strike via antenna, set top box and then the HDMI port, killing that port only which I was lucky.

Since the set was totally dead , i'd follow the 5V stdby line through to IC5000 and check the 3.3v and 1.2v out of that because it's the 3.3v that lights the LED at the front.

Same thing happened to me the first time I got lightning, 1 HDMI port out (no damage to EEPROM), later another (EEPROM still ok), and finally component went out with rest of board. None the less good advice, those voltages were where I planned on beginning. I HOPE THE EEPROM WAS NOT DAMAGED.

Something I discussed on another thread, there is an EEPROM editor built into the SVC-TOOL. You have to select the top right box and hold the mute key for several seconds so it will appear. Once there you can select it and press OK to enter the editor. Several flash IC can be selected to modify and write.
