heatgunning a ps3 board is a bad idea , and is definately not a permanat fix, 9/10 it wont work or will kill the rsx chip, the solder needs to reach around 220c to reflow properly , even with a proper ir machine they are finicky about reflows, i reball the ones i do but try to steer clear of ps3 mostly lol

In my experience, having both experience fixing these things and reading other peoples stories, 2 to 3 months is it I'm afraid, I've never had one lasting any longer and even done via the IR route doesn't guarantee a long life, even a re-ball can still fail in time, best thing to do is fix it again the Youtube way and think about a replacement soon.

Thanks i know this is not a permanent fix, but i was asking which of the ways would be better spreading the Thermo paste or just put a pea in the meddle and using No clean flux?thanks

Thermal paste has nothing to do with flux usage. In general place a pea-sized drop and spread out using an old credit card or other device. You do not want to rely on the heatsink to spread the paste.

When re-flowing, I know it's best, but using no clean flux made no difference to how long it lasted for me, especially for a first time re-flow, so for me so I don't use it when fixing PS3s and it's that dreaded heat gun, variable temperature one though.

Thermal paste, now what I do for the PS3 is to run about 4 very thin lines of the stuff across the heat spreader and use a credit card to spread it out just thin enough so as to not see the heat spreader coming through, the compression and natural heat produced by the PS3 will help it spread out further to where it want's to be.

Best way to properly rework the ps3 is to remove the heatspreader and get it down to the BGA itself and rework that way. I always remove the glue holding the sides whenever I get a laptop or game console in. It's a hit or miss with this shit for real lol I use an ACHI IR SC PRO....Best circuit board I've found that actually holds up, are MacBooks. =)

Thanks guys; well i did it the way you guys advise and it did not last long (3 months), just watched a few movies, i guess i'll try the flux an the Pea size in the meddle and and let it spread by itself,
some people say that when one spreads the paste it creates bubbles and is when it over heats, will see. nothing to loose this PS3 was picked up from the dumpster, and i'm no gamer a matter fact i hate games, just picked it up for the challenge of fixing it,

BGA rework is the same as any profession, without the right tools and training you cannot expect quality work

Longevity depends on many factors, some may last a wk, a few mths or even a couple of yrs

It also depends on how the unit is used as well

Some units that we have repaired lasted 2 yrs and still going, others have returned in a couple of wks and we proceed to lift the chip to find lifted pads or bridges which can be associated with moisture

Boards made around 2005/ 2006 are more common to these issues simply due to time they were built which is almost a decade now

In conclusion, if i repair say a few capacitors using cheap chinese brand the repair will not last compared to me using high quality japanese capacitors as well as the type of flux used to solder the connections

                  The same applies with BGA

Thanks ; i performed the YLOD Fix today and it was a success, how long it will last?
yet to be seen, but i did it deferent from last time and i noticed right away the fan running much more silent and very little heat coming from the vents, compared to the last YLOD i did before,i did this way in this video, only applied a little more heat

There really is no way to tell how long it'll last. It all depends on how bad the solder joints are/were, what temp you reached and for how long, if the board flexed and how many times it's been reworked and how hard it's being pushed.

The more times you rework the solder spheres, the weaker they become.

I love the title of the video, permie fix lol Nothing is permie on game consoles, not even reballs. Reballing is of course the way to go on game consoles tho.

Problem with the video is, it's just a "trick" to get it going again. A Preheater does majority of the work heating the board up and the top heat does just enough to get the BGA to temp, it has to be heated both at the same time to get a more proper rework.

Is this personal or for someone else? Good news tho, if the fans are running much smoother, chances are it'll outlast the last reflow you did. =)

Thanks ALR for your reply,i just followed the video instructions, only when i heated the Cpu i gave a little more heat than the 15secs shown on the video,
well hope it last more time then the 3months if it doesn't it's no loss,
i found this thing in the dumpster and i'm not a gamer,a matter of fact i hate playing games i just use it for a movie or a blue ray cd move,
and if it doesn't last long i just send it to the the dumpster where it came from,no biggy.

In order to properly melt the solder balls they should be liquidous for at lest 30 sec and liquidous means the entire chip is floating on liquid balls

I've repaired hundred of PS3's with the YLOD. Most people make the mistake of putting on far too much thermal paste. I heat up the 2 chips slightly then apply Arctic Silver about 1/2 size of a cooked grain of rice and spread evenly with a credit card. A pea size amount is far too much, its just needs the thinnest amount. Works for me and I very rarely see them back within the 3 months warranty I give.
