    Samsung LN40A550P3FXZA video issues

I have this Samsung 40 inch it has been working fine since it was bought.
That was until I decided to get up one more morning and play some Xbox.
I turned the tv on like usual and began playing a game.
15 minutes into playing the screen went black but the sound remained.
I thought it may have been my cables so I tried another hdmi and av cables
the screen was still black but you could hear sound.

I turned the tv off and let it sit for a few minutes and tried to watch a dvd from my blu ray player. Again, a few minutes into the movie the screen goes black and the sound remains.

It does not matter what type of input you use or what device your playing
the tv still does the same thing.

Any ideas? I am kinda stumped.

Are the backlights on?(faint glow in a dark room), can you see an image if you shine a flashlight on the screen very close and at an angle?

No faint glow. I can see an image when I shine a light through the back of the screen.
So that tells me that the backlight has an issue.

      What should I do next?

        Hi,

It would be a good idea to take a good clear picture of the power board and post it.
I looked through my notes and found that I had repaired that same model that had bad capacitors.
Posting a photo will help verify if you have that issue.

Can you post some pictures of the circuit boards in the TV?

Once we see your board, then we can tell you to test the voltages at some test points to verify.

                The caps look fine.
                No bulging or anything.

                    Hi,

The model number is one of the models that were included for the capacitor class action lawsuit.
Even though the capacitors are not bulged they could be bad.
I would replace them with good quality Panasonic FM series caps. It isn't that expensive to recap the power supply and it might solve the problem.
Unless you have an ESR meter and and a capacitor tester you could overlook caps that are really bad but "look" good.
I've seen it a number of times.

                    Mike

I will replace the caps and see how it goes.

You can buy the capacitors from DIGIKEY: about $1 per cap plus $2.50 shipping. Search, e.g. for a capacitor marked "1000uF 10V Samwha WB" replace with digikey search "1000uF 10V fm" (the "fm" in search will find Panasonic FM, just check product page for "Series: FM" and "Manufacturer: Panasonic".)

                          I am having a similar issue with a Samsung LN55C630K1FXZA 55 Inch.

Sometimes when I turn it on it is fine, but much of the time the screen will come on for a few seconds and then it goes black. There is still sound. After reading this thread I took a flashlight and shined it on the front of the screen up close and can see the picture very faintly. All of the capacitors look fine (I can provide a picture if needed).

Should I also replace capacitors to address this issue?

                          Thanks in advance!

                          Steve

                              Hello,

I have the exact same problem as described by darkweezil.

I have a LN40A550P3FXZA. When you turn the TV on, everything works perfectly. Then, after maybe 5 minutes or 2 hours or whatever time (not regular), the screen goes completely off (no glare, no stripes, nothing, just like if it was off), but the audio keeps going. Turning it off and back on works very rarely. Most of the time I need to let it sit for a couple of minutes at least. And when I turn it back on, it happens again. One thing I've noticed is that the failure occurs faster if I am watching cable (directly connected to the back, no box), and even faster if it is an HD channel. Component seems to work a little longer and HDMI the longest of all inputs I've tried.

The capacitors look good, though I have already read here that even if they look good they may not be working. Also, I am pretty sure these are not the original capacitors (I bought the TV from a friend who was getting rid of it about 2 years ago).

                              The boards I have are:
                              - Power: SIP408A (3925310014AD)

                              - Main: PEARL BN41-00975B(2008.01.13) (on the board)
                              BN97-01985T (on sticker)
BN94-01628T (sticker on top of "heat sink")
                              AA40-00177A / TDQU6-K01A / 8215M17G (on cable connector)

I am attaching some pictures showing all boards.

Any help would be very helpful!!
