Sony KDL-40S4100 image problem vertical lines

My Sony KDL-40S4100 recently started having image problems. 3/4 of the left side of the screen is affected by this (see images). When I first turn on the TV the whole area is black. When playing a video it changes in color according to what is playing and sometimes the image corrects itself for a second or two. It seems that this happens more consistently with bright images. Sometimes when turning the TV off and turning it back on (without unplugging) I see vertical colored lines. This happens with all input sources.

This is what I have done so far without any change to the problem:

    1) cleaned and reset ribbon cables
    2) changed t-con board
    3) checked tab bonds (tapping, heating etc.) does not affect the image

Could this be a power problem or more likely a bad tab bond? Any suggestions are welcome.

Looking up the model number on google, seems like this model is known for bad tab bonds and bad panels (Its the sony panel with the speaker on the bottom of the screen). So I would assume its another bad panel.

Looks to me like an actual panel fault rather than a tab bond fault because it doesn't affect all of one half of the panel. Small chance of tab bonds fault.

We actually had very few this week but it's typically around 5 or 6 per week on badcaps.

When you say panel fault do you mean the driver board or the actual LCD panel? Why would a bad panel affect 3 segments simultaneously and the picture still show correctly every once in a while (as shown in the last image I uploaded)? Is there anything I can measure on the driver board to see if there could be a problem there (voltages, resistors etc.)? Trying to learn a bit more about this issue before giving up on this set.

          Yes, LCD panel.

Usually, I like to say panel fault rather than tab bond fault, because for all but a few failures, there is no viable fix, even if it is intermittent.

Typically, you're talking about one of the solder balls on the underside of the source driver chips (at top of panel) failing - unfortunately, these are bonded to the ribbons which are essentially unreplaceable, unless you happen to have a $1mn tab bonding machine and new ribbon to replace.

Is there any fix to this? I recently got a KDL-40S4100 for free, and the same portion of the screen is completely dead. I messed around with the tabs with no luck.

I haven't tried any video sources, just a channel with no antenna attached.

            Picture attached.

There isn't any fix if it is a panel problem, short of replacing the actual screen, but that's not really worth it.

The best thing you can do is IF you have any spare parts replace the parts and see if its the same.
Or just tab on some cables/tabs to see if you can find anything. Are all tabs getting warm? ( The small resistor or what is it ).
I only repair Panasonic plasma tv's! Currently owning a TX-P55VT50 and still searching for a ZT60!

Okay, good to know, I guess I'll be recycling this one.

I don't have any spare parts. All the tabs appeared to be warm, from what I remember.

Hey did you guys. I got a similiar issue on the same model sony except one half of the screen is completely out. When hooked up a input and move it around the picture comes on any chance its the main board??

                      Sony KDL-40V3000 - Vertical lines
                      by gpo23
                      Hello,

                      i order a t-con because i had bad colors on my SONY KDL-40V3000 :

With the new t-con the color are good but there are vertical lines on all the screen :

I've tried the old t-con and it returned to the initial issue (bad colors but no vertical lines)

Is there a way to fix the vertical lines on the new t-con ?

                      Thank you for your help

                      Screen Display Vertical Multicolor Lines
                      by Stanley1843
Hello, I have a screen in where sometimes when I open it pop-up vertical multicolor lines (I would say the most of them are green). If I tun off and turn on the screen the lines dissapear or if I leave open the screen after approximately five minutes the lines gone. I measured the below voltages on the main PCB and on the T-CON board and the voltages are the same when it doesn’t display the vertical lines and when it displays the vertical lines. Also, I cleaned all the connectors very good with IPA. I moved back and forth the connectors and the COF tabs but the vertical lines didn't displayed...

Sony XBR-85X950G Gray horizontal lines and vertical picture shift diagnosis?
                      by noisykid
5.5 year old 85 inch Sony Bravia X950G started showing gray horizontal lines across the bottom of the screen and the picture shifts slightly vertically when it happens. The lines sometimes get bigger/smaller vertically and bounce back. See the video for the problem. It seems to be happening after it warms up after an hour or so. Happens regardless of source. Right now there's nothing but power cable connected and it's happening. We did hook up a new Nintendo Switch to our HDMI switching receiver today, and played for a while with no issues, but this problem didn't occur til a few hours later while...

Strange LG TV issue : Image vertical lines in black screen
                      by Ancient1
                      Hi

                      Asking for a friend.

I'm used to black vertical line in otherwise good image - probable solution is a rubber to push and tighten the COFs bonding.
but here its the opposite !

TV has new T-con = same issue
A missing panel voltage would have global effect

So , what should one do ? how can I find where the fault is ?

                      Thanks !...

Three vertical lines without t-con board connected: Sony 55X8000F
                      by iampivot
I have a Sony 55x8000f that has three vertical lines (three different colors), with the lines still showing when the cable from t-con board to the panel is disconnected. Am wondering what might be causing this? Unfixable panel problem?
