    Trouble with Zenith Z32LC2DA

    Hello,

    I am troubleshooting a Zenith Z32LC2DA TV.

If I turn it on, and use it, it will play for 2 or 3 hours just fine. Then, the picture goes out, and starts displaying all sorts of strange patterns, from a black screen to different odd patterns, and this will continue for awhile.

If I leave the TV sit awhile, it will play again for awhile before going back to the strange patterns.

I do see a cap on the PS board that is bulging at the top, but, nothing more, all the rest look normal.

I'm going to assume this will be a good place to start.

    Your opinions?

Can you give us pictures of the boards and chassis and a pic of the cap that's bulging please

Ok. Thanks. I've attached photos. In a couple of the photos, I've pointed to the cap I think might be suspect.

Yes that cap needs changing, start there and see what results you get.

        Post back once done

          Ok, I have it out, and it's a 1000 uF 16v cap.

Is the 16v critical? I don't remember from my high school electronics class! That was a long time ago.

If I remember correctly, a higher voltage rating will not harm.

          Please advise.

You must get the uF the same, Voltage is just what the cap can take at highest. Higher is fine

You should also avoid capacitors from RadioShack and other generic shops as they are not suitable. Digikey, badcaps.net sell caps. Panasonic FM/FR/FC are recommended.

Unfortunately, I saw this post a little too late.

I did get a cap from Radio Shack.

The TV has been operating for almost 3 hours now, without shutting off like before, but, there now is a squeal coming from the Power Supply board.

I am going to have to assume this is due to the cap from the Shack, as the squeal was not there before, but, the TV failed to operate for more than a couple of hours before going crazy.

Well, you know you have fixed it. Therefore, I would go and buy the right capacitor. It will cost you less than 4 dollars from Digikey and give you many more years of life. If the Shack cap dies, it could cause further damage. If you need help ordering the right one let us know.

Yes, I might. The Digi-Key site is daunting.

I found this one. Looks right.

                    http://www.digikey.com/product-detai...73TB-ND/268458

Would a different one be more suitable?

                    Thanks.

                        Thanks.

I'll be ordering this from DigiKey and replacing the Radio Shack cap.

Any idea as to what might have caused the squeal? Crap capacitor from Radio Shack doing something weird?

Yes, the capacitor could cause this.

I've replaced using the recommended capacitor from Digikey, and still have the squeal. The TV is still working however.

It is clear the squeal is coming from somewhere in the Power Supply Board. Any suggestions as to which cap it could be, or possibly another part?

At a normal viewing distance, is the squeal audible? Sometimes parts can make this noise (coil whine) but it is an acceptable noise if the user can't hear it while watching TV. Try with the case on, too.

It may be. The only thing is, it was not there before the repair, but, the TV only functioned about 2 hours, and the cap was out of spec, so, being in spec now, might make a difference in the circuit.
