    Westinghouse LD-4655vx - I think I just lucked out

Bought this from a guy on CL; the ad is still up (http://kansascity.craigslist.org/ele/3919422549.html). I talked to him on the phone and he seemed like an ok guy. He said it wouldn't power up, so I am thinking power supply. So, I go do some research and it uses an external, laptop style, power supply. But, I feel surely he tested it before buying a new tv.

I call him and we agree on $50. When I get to his house he has the tv, manual, and remote waiting for me, but not the power supply. I ask and he says, "Aw yeah. I knew there was something I was forgetting." and he goes and finds it. The way he forgot it made it seem to me like the thought never crossed his mind it could be the culprit.

I get home and test it, and sure enough it is dead. I tested a few other power supplies just to make sure I wasn't goofing up with the technique. Ordered a new one for $15 online. Here's to hoping it is that easy of a fix.

A more common fault with these is the LED strip shorting out to the chassis damaging something in the TV eventually. Usually have no light from screen but power LED works. Repairable, though, if the power supply is not at fault.

Was your power supply dead, also?

I just picked up this TV yesterday as well. Guy had already replaced the dead supply but that wasn't the original issue. It powers up by unplugging one ribbon cable as noted in the other thread on here. I'm positive its the shorted out cable problem but it was getting late last night and I didn't have time to dig any deeper in to it.

I'll be following the leads in this thread:

I'm certain the supply was originally killed from being plugged in for an extended period with the cable shorted out.

Aaron, is there any point in opening it until I get the new power supply and see if it fires up? I don't really see one. I would have the check the amps, but I highly doubt I could use a laptop power supply to test it.

Plugging in a new power supply may quickly damage it.

So you are saying I should open it up? How can I test it if I have no way to get power to it. The power supply I ordered is for this tv. Are you saying I still shouldn't use it?

Mine survived some brief testing. Not saying yours will or will not but I wouldn't leave it plugged in if it doesn't come on immediately. If it won't power up, unplug and follow that thread I sent to check the ribbons going to the backlighting. You can unplug both ribbons to start and see if the unit powers up. If it does, proceed to connect one then the other and attempt to power up each time to verify which one is shorted.

Go ahead and read through that other thread now regardless to get an understanding of what may be happening.

I guess I did luck out. After opening it up and not seeing any problems with the ribbon cable, I plugged in the new power supply, and boom!

Nice, do check the display has even intensity.

It does. The picture looks great. If only I was good at selling tvs on craiglist as I am at fixing them. I now have 4 to sell and my wife is giving me the business about it.

I will check on the PS. I got it here:

Looks good. I might keep it.
