Westinghouse LD-4655vx - I think I just lucked out
Bought this from a guy on CL; the ad is still up (http://kansascity.craigslist.org/ele/3919422549.html). I talked to him on the phone and he seemed like an ok guy. He said it wouldn't power up, so I am thinking power supply. So, I go do some research and it uses an external, laptop style, power supply. But, I feel surely he tested it before buying a new tv.
I call him and we agree on $50. When I get to his house he has the tv, manual, and remote waiting for me, but not the power supply. I ask and he says, "Aw yeah. I knew there was something I was forgetting."...

Re: Samsung Plasma PN50C550G1FXZA No Picture No Sound--Please Help
I would start by using a multimeter to test the output voltages on the pins of your power supply. Make sure you unplug the power supply from the main board first.
From what you described, the PS is probably shot, but better to double check it first.

New PS board fixed it. Thanks for the help tom and bud!

Re: Samsung LN40B500P3F with an odd problem
I ordered a new board. The other one I have is some junk one the guy ordered from Hong Kong that came with busted capacitors. In the meantime, I would like to learn more about troubleshooting power supplies down to the component. Is there a good website to learn about that kind of stuff?

I have an extra power board. Should I try swapping out some of the transformers?

1.5-1.6 for all of them.

Where are the windings? Thanks.

Re: Samsung LN40B500P3F with an odd problem
To further expand. From top to bottom, the transformers read:
With the backlight on: 2VAC, 2VAC, 4VAC, Inconsistent reading
After the backlight shuts off they all read ~2VAC.
So is the culprit the 3rd or 4th transformer, or none of the above. I feel this is where the problem lies, but I am no expert.

Re: Samsung LN40B500P3F with an odd problem
Update! With the backlight on, the caps read ~390VDC. When the backlight turns off it drops to ~160VDC.
I have noticed the transformer shown below seems to have inconsistent voltage readings. Could that be causing the panel to shut down?

Re: Samsung LN40B500P3F with an odd problem
Yeah. I just redid it and got 163v DC. Also, in the limited time I had to test them before the backlight went off, I checked all the transformers and one of them isn't giving me a consistent reading. Those should be checked on AC, correct?
On a side note, is there a diagram or instruction sheet that tells someone fairly new to troubleshooting this stuff where to test for AC and where for DC? Thanks.

161. I was on AC. Will all these be DC?

I just did that. Is it abnormal for the volts to jump around a lot. As in, I couldn't get a consistent reading....

Metal workbench I have. I got the backlight to come on briefly again. Transformer pulling to much voltage, perhaps?

Re: Samsung LN40B500P3F with an odd problem
So I am getting ~66 volts on the two large ones. Here is the odd part. For the first time ever, I plugged it in and the backlight stayed on (I had it disconnected from the main board), but I moved it a couple inches and it went back off. So, the back light functionally works.
