I have not been able to test this, but I have a fair feeling that a buffer which has suffered due to a cracked screen can be walking wounded, and appear to work fine for some time before failing due to leaky/damaged buffer outputs. Each buffer IC output controls one line on the display, typically 90 per IC, operating with a voltage of Vsc (~195V) between floating ground and output, so they're very sensitive.
