50" Vizio Plasma P50HDM Loud pop, Sound but no picture.

Just got a 50 inch Plasma Vizio. I don't really work with plasmas much since I don't know that much about them but I'll give this one a try.

Symptoms are: Turns on, Has sound but no picture, no flicker or light of any kind when powered on.

Said there was a loud pop noise, the screen was all gray and then nothing but the sound was still on.

I usually first suspect the Y sustain and Buffer boards everytime I get the "sound but no picture" on plasmas. I checked all the IC's on the y buffer boards and they don't seem to have any burn marks.

Anyone dealt with this model before? Will post pictures later!

Looking up this model on SJ, LG PDPX3 panel with those horrible IPMs on the sustain boards which generally fail. Big job and not exactly cheap either. pretty old panel nowadays.

After picking up a few older plasmas I've just about given up on them due to cost. Someone needs to basically give me one for it to even be worth while to look at. Its tough to justify spending much on one when you can pick up a brand new set this size for under $500.

I don't touch LG IPM based plasmas with a ten foot pole, unless they're free. I will touch older NEC/Pioneer/Panasonic plasmas and some older Samsung/LG if they don't use hybrids.

This one was given to me free so I took a chance on it. Don't really know much about plasmas though.

I can also borrow a friends scope if needed with this set. Not sure how to test out the sustain boards though with the scope.

If you post a picture of the scope and the Y-sustain then I can guide you through setting it up. But usually with loud pop/no picture one of the fuses will obviously be blown or Vs will be shorted.

I had 3 LG Y-SUS with bad IPM, the hardest part is getting them out and I smoked one of the boards. The other 2 I managed to get it replaced. The IPM itself was close to $50. The working Y-SUS though will sell for a good amount, I think I got $120 for it.

Heres the Y-sustain, I measured all the fuses on it and found one that was open and had no continuity.

So just wondering, What are some methods to remove the two IPMs?

I've read some methods of cutting off the pins of the ipm and desoldering each pin, how would you cut off the pins?

If you snap off the set screws ( i use small mole grips that have been ground down to fit in the heat sink) some times if the set screws are still high use a small burr in a dremmel to grind flush then using a 1/8 drill, drill out the rest of the screws with the heat sink off cut the legs with side cutters, then just desolder, when refitting use nuts and bolts to hold heat sink hope this help's

Alright So I just removed both the IPMs. Took a good amount of prying...

Looking on the underside of the IPMs there doesn't seem to be any burn marks? it looks normal, is there usually a burnt mark on these IPMs when they go bad?

I haven't bought a TV in awhile. I had a tough time selling a 5-year-old 50" Panasonic plasma with 1080p for $310, so I decided to stop buying TVs. Like you mentioned, unless I can get one for free, they're starting to not be worth my time and expense to fix and resell.

The 50" LGs with bad IPMs are really not worth it anymore, since it's recommended that all four IPMs be replaced to the tune of $40 each. Also, you could still end up with mal-discharge issues when you're finished repairing the Y-Sus and Z-Sus.

Alright so I found two resistors R82 and R22 reading like 75k ohms... I desoldered them and they both instantly just broke in half.

                          I found the IPMs

Yes, the YPPD-J016E IPM is fine, and the seller is great. I've bought many parts from that particular seller.

Decided to check out the Z-sustain, and found two bad smd resistors R91 and R9 so the IPM on the Z-sustain must is bad also...

Guess I'll be parting this one out.

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

                                Hello,

I've got a really strange issue with the speakers on my Philips 43PUS7506/12. It makes this awful loud buzzing now. It happened after it was attempted to be wall mounted - I think the back got squeezed and something broke.
I thought maybe the speakers got damaged, so I replaced them - no dice.

Hi I inherited a Vizio M65-E0 that isn't working. It must have been dropped on the corner because I found that the infrared circuit had a capacitor with one end broken off of the board and some green corrosion around the plug to the main board. I re-soldered the capacitor and cleaned the corrosion well and tried turning the M65-E0 on and I was successful. My problem is that while the back lights come on and appear to perform local dimming there is no picture or sound. It kind of looks like you are looking at the TV through a very dense fog, where changing the input on the remote will change bright...

I am currently trying to repair a Grundig Vision 9 37 9880 T USB LCD TV for a friend that has a weird audio problem. Basically everything works fine except for the heavily distorted sound when the Subwoofer module is connected and there is a buzzing sound coming from the PSU PCB.

This seems to be a rather rare TV so there is not much prior on topic help to be found however a service manual is available at the usual sources (Electro Tanya i.e.).
