    32mf231d/37

Just picked this up after work and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the back cover off. I know it has plastic tabs in addition to the screws but I fell like I'm going to break it prying on the edges. Any suggestions from someone that has taken one apart before? There is a little slot on the back with a lock symbol too and I was thinking that might have something to do with it. Can't find good instructions anywhere online.

Meant to put Magnavox in the title but I can't edit now.

    Thanks,

    Aaron

Scratch that guys. I wasn't using enough force. :-) Got the back off and the power supply has 3 bad caps. Explains the shutting off after 10 minutes or so of watching.

Those caps certainly need swapping out, but is that all it needed?

I worked on one of these awhile back, and I had to replace two 1200 mfd caps to get it working. That was the extent of the damage; nothing else had failed. In your case, you obviously have three bad caps to replace.

If you're curious, run the set with the caps bad. Measure the power supply voltages. Chances are you'll find the 5V rail dropping as the set begins operating, causing the main board to shut down after a short period of time.

Working perfect for the last hour. $25 for the TV and 3 caps. Nice picture for a 7 year old TV too.

And Tom, the voltage was indeed dropping at multiple locations. Once it approached 4v that's all she wrote.

Cool. Do you have a buzzing sound at all? After I fixed mine, the buzzing sound was annoying.

Nope. No sound other than the speakers. :-)

Wonder what the buzzing was on yours. Audio, or something coming from the board?

Well crap. It started back after about 90 minutes. Resets every 10-15 seconds. Back to the drawing board. Unfortunately I put it all back together.

If you only replaced the obviously bloated caps, don't be surprised that you might have more bad caps unless you have an ESR meter and tested each capacitor out of circuit. Think cockroach theory.

Yeah. I realize maybe some others were bad as well. The kit I bought came with all 15 or so that are on the board. This weekend, I'll take it back apart and swap all of them. I just figured I'd take the easy way out and save the others for a rainy day. Will update when the rest are swapped.

The only one I don't have is the large main capacitor so hopefully it's not the problem.

Thanks. That was my understanding from much of the reading I've done here. I'll post results once the others are changed.

Changed the remainder of the caps and the set is working perfect now. Ran it through 2 full movies last night with no restarts so I'm calling it good.

Well Tom. That's an excellent question which I can't answer now. I already re-assembled everything. What should I look for in the future?

I believe they were gold and black in color. Not sure if that's specific to Rubycon or if it represents the series. I do know that they had a 105 degree temp rating.
