    Testing this buffer board

    Hi

I have got a plasma that has blown 4 fets on the Y sus (Pictured) everything else seems ok.

Its the buffer that is worrying me, normally you can see pit marks in the IC's and know if they are blown, how do you check the ones pictured, or do you advise just changing the buffer board

    Thanks in advance

I'm assuming 'the buffer' is the y-buffer?

How did the MOSFETs blow? Short circuit gate-drain?
My guess is, yes, the buffer boards should be replaced. Chips can short circuit without melting or burning. But yeah, I'm no expert...

Another user on here, tom66, knows a lot about plasma displays, he will be able to help you for sure

      Re: Testing this buffer board

Yes your assumption is correct, this is the y buffer, the mosfets were S/C'd

Is it always the case when the fets blow it takes out the IC's on the buffer, and what will happen if I put a new Ysus in and the board is blown will it take out the new y sus board??

      Thanks again

        Re: Testing this buffer board

I believe you just need to find the ground pin on each of the ribbon connectors and then take your meter and run it slowly down each side of the connector to check for shorts. Check Tom66's messages, somewhere he posted a video on it.

              Just one question,

It says I need to find the sustain output on the buffer board

The only connection plug I have is labelled

              1. GND
              2. 5v
              3. GND
              4. OC1
              5. OC2
              6. Data
              7. LE
              8. GND
              9. CLK
              10. GND

Which pin am I aiming for

I'm pretty sure you want to use ground. Here's another pretty good demonstration:

                  Yes, my video.

The buffer chips are under the heatsinks.

                    Re: Testing this buffer board

Cheers Tom, got the IC's just wanted to know which pin out I needed to use, the buffer has got no continuity through any of the flat cable connections.

Tom Thank you it must be a first that I have seen a proper tutorial that explains more in laymans terms, will have a look through a few of your others later..Brilliant

Can I just ask a stupid question whilst your here, I couldnt be arsed to go and get a new battery for my DMM so I used my AMM for the continuity checks, when I tested it showed continuity through every single terminal on each of the connectors...Why?

I was forced to get a new battery and no shorts anywhere

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

                      Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

Need advice testing a samsung power supply board with scope
                      by repair-it
I am attempting to test a samsung power supply board to verify the pfc ic is working. I am powering up the board with my isolation transformer. The board turns on fine but when I attempt to connect the ground for the scope probe, it trips out the isolator. I was taught not to 'float my scope' so I am wondering if I should test without connecting the ground lead or would that be asking for trouble? Not sure how else to test, I don't have a portable scope. I could plug direct to mains power but that would bypass the safety factor.
