Vizio E420VT resets itself at certain times

I purchased one of these for $50 on craigslist. The picture is awesome and as long as I don't alter the default tv settings, it seems to work fine with my computer. However, the second I try to change settings or attempt to control it with the remote, it shuts off most of the time, but not all.

I saw posts online talking about it being a firmware flaw, but nobody really had a solution. I just wanted to post it on here and see if anyone had any ideas. I already took off the back and didn't see anything (capacitors, connectors, etc) that looked out of sorts. Seller said the tv was 18 months old.

Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks.

Is is me or are some of the little capacitors on the psu bulged?

It is possible. I am going to test all the capacitors when I get off work today.

Being fairly new to this stuff, will the capacitance readings change as the capacitors lose power? Also, is there a good place to find info on the capacitors on the board? It seems the specs are on the side facing the board on most of these and I cannot ready them.

You should not test capacitors while they are energised.

I figured as much. The board is disconnected and I am running through the readings. If I get repeated overload readings on a particular capacitor, am I testing it wrongly or could it be bad.

Are you just measuring capacitance? Or ESR?

Capacitance, but looking online, it seems I need an ESR reader. Do you have one you specifically recommend? Also, how interchangeable are the video boards for Vizio (or any brand for that matter). Would another video board from a 42" Vizio work? I ask this because it is possible that the tv is suffering from a hardware fault that was corrected in later models.

I would be surprised if your problem is related to the capacitors. Nowadays it is a rare occurrence. I use a Peak Elec ESR60, which costs around $110. You can get ones for as little as $40.

Based on what I just went through with a E470VA with a very similar control board, I'm going to say replace the main. I tried the eeprom first with no luck. Then got a control board and that also didn't work. Make sure the numbers match exactly. I got it right on the third try and the TV works perfect now. Specifically the numbers under the model board assembly. That's what finally got me the correct one.

I just realized I may have one of these at home. I'm leaving at lunch and will check the board out. Post a nice clear picture of the white sticker on yours so we can compare numbers.

I picked up an ESR meter via eBay for $20 shipped. It has no case, but it does the job...I think, I haven't actually identified a bad, non bulged, cap with it yet.

Thanks for the heads up Aaron. Here are the pictures.

Sorry man. Forgot to check this til today. It's a SV420M so not gonna cut it.

Like I said, changing the main on the 47" I have here did the trick though. Let us know how you make out on it.

What I found when doing mine was the number right below the board model assembly had to match exactly. The one on yours that starts with 705. Seemed that this TV had several different build configurations.

Thanks Aaron. I found many boards that match on Ebay. My only question is some of them are pulled from the 32" model of the tv. Does that even matter or am I strictly trying to match the board numbers?

It may matter if the 42" are 120Hz and the 32" are a "mere" 60Hz.

                                  Both are 60hz.

                                    Are both 720p, or 1080p?

                                      E370: 1920x1080

                                      E420: 1920x1280

However, most of the sites listed show the E420 at 1920x1080 so maybe you could shed some light on if their is any difference. The part numbers and boards are identical.

I can guarantee you there is no such thing as a 1920x1280 panel. That is most likely a typo and should be 1920x1080.
