Vizio E470VA Logo lights up white but nothing else comes on

Hi everyone. First post here but I've done plenty of reading. I have a background in Electrical Engineering so I'm new to the TV repair but certainly not electronics. I've managed to fix a few already on my own from just reading other posts but wanted to check on this one before I proceed. Anyway, on to the point.

I picked this one up cheap on craigslist a few days ago. As soon as the power is connected the VIZIO logo lights up white (never shows the amber standby). At this point nothing responds or can be done to change anything. There is no backlight or anything else. I've checked all the voltages going out of the power supply and everything reads zero except for the two 5V feeds going from the PS to the main control board. I've unplugged the inverter board from the PS and disconnected everything from the control board except the 3 wires going to the logo light and it has the same result. This leads me to believe that its either got to be the power supply or the control board. I figured the power supply should be putting out some voltage other that 5V even in standby but wasn't sure.

I thought I'd go ahead and post a picture of a power supply like what I'm dealing with. This isn't my actual picture of course but is identical. With the power cord connected and the VIZIO logo lit up white on the front, the only power I'm getting from the PS is the two 5V outputs shown coming from the jack at the bottom right of this picture.

Again, I can post actual pics of my stuff this evening but wanted to get a jump on it. Everything on my PS physically looks to be ok.

It's likely the EEPROM on the main board. You can buy the component for ~$25 and solder it on yourself or send it to be repaired for ~$50. Do a google search for the part number on the main board and the word repair.

I'll check into that right now. Plan on fixing it myself for sure. I've got plenty of soldering experience as well as a hot air station for removing chips. Should be no problem.

Is there any way to obtain the eeprom flash for these chips and do it yourself? I'd need to get the numbers off the chip first but I figure its most likely been corrupted rather than a bad chip?

It almost certainly is simply corrupted. If you have a programmer and hex file you can do it. Many people can get programmers cheap but the people doing these programming services keep the hex files close to their chest so you're SOL unless you can copy it off the new chip (for future fixes) or get it from somewhere else. I've encountered a few hex files, none for Vizio though.

Well, I have an update. Not the one I was hoping for but I guess its progress. The TV now shows the amber standby light and responds to the remote when I turn it on. The light changes to white and the backlights come on. However, all I get on the screen is what is shown in the attached picutres. Doesn't look to me like the screen is physically damaged or anything.

Ocasionally these lines don't even show up but usually they do. The rest of the time just the backlight comes on.

Let me know if anyone has some additional advice.

Got the chip pre-programmed on EBay. I'm assuming it was done correctly.

Looks to me like the LCD panel may be bad too, could be bad tab bond. Maybe fixable. Perhaps turning the TV on and off rapidly corrupted it, the owner may have tried this after it showed the fault.

Well crap. That's certainly not what I wanted to hear. I'll let you guys know if I get anywhere with it.

I did reseat all the ribbon cables going to the panel but no change.

Does tv have sound?plug in composite video , change input source.

Ok. Checked for sound. It comes on but sounds choppy and only the left channel works. It cuts out every few seconds.

Seems like something is still up with the control board.

Should I keep messing with it or call it a wash?

I had this same tv, picked it up with no picture. Found bad main board, replaced all is well now.

Ok. May have to resort to that. Hate to just trash the thing. Like I said, I did make progress on it with the EEPROM.

Well, I have a new update on this. Replaced the entire main board. TV now turns on and has a beautiful picture. However, every 5 seconds or so the picture goes out for about 1/2 a second. I read this other thread that rogmiller started and it sounds like the same issue.

This was a used main board so I figure maybe its bad too. I guess I'll see about a return and hopefully the guy has another he can swap me with.

Tried this?

While holding down (UP ARROW) the on the Remote Commander, press the
POWER button on the Front Panel of the set.
The set restarts and displays the initial setup screen. This may take
several minutes.
