    Samsung LN52A550P3F - No Backlighting

So, I've got a friend who had this TV die on him and instead of paying to have it repaired, he bought a new TV and held onto it. Enter me... I stop by to say Hi one day and he asked if I'd like to take it and try to repair it, and that I can have it /shrug. Why the hell not, I repair computers every day.

So the symptoms were that when he goes to turn it on, it clicks and then clicks again turning off. I instantly said "Power Supply", which he was told was an expensive fix, hence buying a new TV instead. Knowing that a PSU on these things is just a series or easy to get to flat PCB board with capacitors, I took it on.

Last night I cracked open the back casing and got to the motherboard. Right off the bat I saw 2 blown capacitors, 1000uf/10v, some crappy brand I"ve never seen before. So I take the motherboard out, check the capactiors with a Blue ESR meter (the ones not showing signs) and all but the blown ones seem to be fine. I replace the two blown ones with Rubycon 1000uf/16v caps that I had from a previous bulk order from BC.net. Slap the entire system back together (checking that all cables are plugged back in (very easy) and I go to power it on.

The samsung TV on chime players and I don't hear a clicking or the TV turning back off... great sign ... until I realize no video . Worried I had failed to plug something back in, I opened the case again and checked, but everything is back and snapped all the way back in.

Being in a VERY dark room (at 3am :P) I put a bright headlamp up to the LCD and can see that there is in fact a picture being drawn, so that portion works just fine. However no back-lighting.

I don't know enough about LCD TVs to know how to solve this problem per se. I realize it could be an inverter, but is all of the circuitry for the inverter apart of this same motherboard? The two back-light cables (white and pink) do plug in on that same board. Any good way to test for what is causing the back-lighting to not come on? I'm starting to wonder if I should order all of the caps needed to replace all of them or is there something else I'm missing. I do have a multimeter but am next to clueless on how to use it, was a Christmas gift.

Any help would be awesome, would love to have this TV up and going before my wife has our baby so that she can watch some TV in the bedroom when she is on bed rest. Thanks guys

Well you may be able to see what exactly your talking about but its a bit difficult
when we cant. Make sure you have good battery in your meter and read this
start at post 19 then you will have an idea what we are talking about when we get the pictures so we can point you in the right direction

I'll start with post 19. I just wanted to note that I'm not getting anything on screen for any amount of time. The back-lighting doesn't even attempt to come on at all.

I've got a brand new (used twice, trying to figure all of its features out) Klien MM2000

Which pictures are you wanting to see, let me know and I'll snap some shots for you. Thanks for the reply

Pictures of all the boards so we can see how they are connected together, then pictures of the power supply, inverter baords, main board. Good pictures of the connectors so we can read any labeling on them.

Re: Samsung LN52A550P3F - No Backlighting

Well... I feel stupid. I cracked back open the panel to take some pictures with my DSLR and lo and behold I noticed that I forgot to plug in the cable from the inverter to the mainboard, so it was never sending the signal to light up the backlights :P.

So this TV fix was simply replacing 2 capacitors that were blown with new Rubycon ones, the set works flawlessly now. Didn't cost me anything since I had those capacitors laying around. Free TV for the win.

Thanks guys, I guess I can delete the pictures of my screw up lol.

I have a Samsung ln52a550p3f as well and I can see the picture but I cant get the backlight on. There is an orange board that the power supply plugs into, and the backlight inverters also plug into it. Do all 4 of those have to be replaced? Or should I replace the entire board?

Pics of the back of the TV with the cover off would be helpful for diagnosing your issue.

You have sound, correct? Do you have a digital multimeter? If so, please post the voltage readings for each of the pins at black connectors CN801 and CNI805 on the power supply when the TV is turned on.

I do have sound and don't have the multimeter. I can try to find one, but is there any other way to tell?

Disconnect that grey cable between the power supply/inverter board and the main board to see if the backlights will come on, if it does, then the power supply/inverter board is OK.

I'm not really sure which grey cable that is, but I disconnected at pins 23 and 24 on the orange board that go to the green board on the right with all the lines in. When I did that the TV didnt turn on at all.

                            For reference:

Orange board = Power supply/inverter board. It takes the AC current coming from the wall outlet and converts it to usable DC current that powers the TV. I call it the heart of the TV.

Green board on right = Main board. It's more or less the brains of the TV. It sends turn on/off signals to the power supply, and it controls a lot of the audio/video circuitry.

A cheap multimeter would be fine.

You can see the grey cable in your picture at close to the top right of your power supply board (yellow).

Cool thanks for the reference point. I had no idea what those were called. I disconnected the thin light grey cable at CNI805 and the TV turned on with no backlight, and then tried it with the thick darker grey cable and it didnt turn on at all.

Set the meter to DC, BLACK probe on the chassis, red probe on PS_ON, report the reading, then red probe on INVERTER/ON/OFF report the reading.
B y the way, this model has problem with bad tab bonding problem, so expect that to fail.
