Sony KDL-40V3000 13 Flashes diagnosis and repair

    Hey everyone,

Just finished up repairing a Sony KDL-40V3000 LCD and wanted to share what I found in case anyone else runs into this.

Upon turning the set on the green power light would come on, then back lighting, then would just briefly show what input it was on. Then it would shut down and give 13 red flashes.
I read this could be a problem with the inverter or the CCFL tubes. I removed the back and checked out the inverter and nothing looked or tested bad. Then I tore the set the rest of the way apart exposing the CCFL tubes and seen the problem. One of the tubes was not seated in the connector and appears it had been arching for a long time. If I had to guess it was this way since new because of the way the tip of the CCFL bent and behind the contacts. There would be no way moving the set around would have caused this. Anyway back to the repair, The contacts were so far gone I could not clean them up to try to reseat the tube in so I soldered a wire on the end of the tube, ran it to the inverter and soldered it there. Turned it on without the screen and all the tubes worked. Put it back together and has been working great.

Nice fix! But did you use high voltage breakdown cable?

Thanks Tom. The wire I used was 18ga stranded copper rated for 300v. I have not heard of high voltage breakdown cable. Do you think what I used is sufficient or should I change it out?

The bulbs use upwards of 1kV, sometimes as much as 3kV. I'd recommend it...

Thanks for the advice Tom. I didn't realize the back lighting was that much voltage. I will definintely change out the stuff I put in there. I found some Belden 18ga wire they make test leads with here at work. Checked the part number and it shows it has a working voltage of 5000v with a breakdown of 20,000v.

When they say "caution: high voltage", they mean it!
