    Sony kdl-32bx320 not powering on

I bought a broken 32" on craigslist cause i was bored ... not a whole lot of money left in repairing 32"ers, but need something to distract me from spending more money on guns.

Its a ~ 1 year old sony (probably a good sign that sony's get out of debt plan to cheapen all their sets is starting to pay off , doesnt power on, no light on front (should the LED be always on / red on new models when off?). I checked the power supply board and it outputs 3.3v on standby, 12.5 volts on 12v when jumped on, and 25.4 volts on the 24v for the inverter. When the mainboard is connected the voltages go to their on state automaticaly after plugging it in (12v and 24v become present), and i hear a near silent clicking from the processor area of the main board. I also tried reseting the set by holding the power button and pressing up on the remote, but no change. (is that just a settings reset on sonys, or will it clear error states?)

Im not sure where to test next to see if its getting the signal to turn on from the IR board, or the button board. The button board does get 3.3v on 1 wire out of 3, but im not sure if its a simple connection to 1 of the other wires that turns the set on, or a more complex signal / pattern. Im not sure if these sets can get a failure signal from the inverter / tcon and choose not to turn on , but youd think in both those states the LED would change color, and using the factory reset would make them turn on again for 2-3 seconds before erroring again.

Ill post some pictures in a few minutes, but here are some part numbers for reference

    power supply board: aps-283
main board: mt5388 lite (there are a lot of other numbers various people give, not sure which are correct), theres 2 versions on ebay for various 32/40/46 inch versions that all seem to be built on the same board. I can get one of the other versions for 10 dollars so tempted to try that, but might be a panel vendor change.
Fixed so far 12 lcd's , 1 plasmas, 5 monitors, 0 dlp's (plan to keep the dlps at 0). and 3 atx power supplies, and 2 motherboards.

    pics posted below

I did the 3volt to bl on test and the backlight lights up, and appears to be consistent in all areas, and i dont think that would prevent the set from showing any sign of life. Manual indicates standby is a yellow lite, I assume thats what it should be in when plugged in, but obviously that doesnt light up.

Im leaning towards just replacing the main board with the identical model main board, because the other variant looks like it has the tcon connector set back, and the board i have has pin pads for that connector place, but uses many less pins... so im guessings its for another brand panel.

The clicking noise from the mainboard might be comming from the 4 black smt parts at the lower left labled 6R8, is there any way to test those? they seem very hard to get good readings on, but appear to have around 1 volt on each side, so id be guessing they control the vcc for the main processor.

Per SONY, in the newer model, they do use error signal from the T-CON board but I never really look into one to see if HI = BAD or = Good. You may want to look up the spec sheet of the panel, it will give you the info on the T-CON and Inverter board pinouts.
6R8 if it is resistor, then that will be 6.8 Ohm resistor.

        Thanks for the sugestion Budm.

        From the LG LC320wxn sheet
        Status Pin:
        Normal : Low (under 0.7V) / Abnormal : High (upper 3.0V)
Please see Appendix IV-1 for more information
The appendix pretty much describes how the tv should retry Von after a failure, and after a short pause.

When the set is plugged in i get a reading of .03 Vdc on the status pin, and when i use 3v to force the backlight on, i get 0Vdc on the status pin.

So it looks like the backlights / inverter are all fine.

Re: Sony kdl-32bx320 not powering on

elektrotanya had a service manual, but it didnt figure much was serviceable. acording to it the standby light will flash for error states, and there is a test screen , that you press info + 5 + vol- + power to get to, but there is no info button on remote...

So further signs that the mainboard is so destroyed, it wont even display error codes or any other signs of life. I guess ill see if i can offer someone down to 40 for the mainboard on ebay.

            One last question:

What voltages should i expect in off / and on state for t-con-on, and t-con-vcc-12? and is it normal for AC OFFDET to be ~ 2.8v ? Not sure what any of those control, and not really sure why the powersupply would need to know anything about the tcon.

AC OffDet can cause your problem on a Sony. This signal lets the microprocessor know that it is getting a good power line voltage. I would have to check my records at work to see what voltage it should be.

How about the pin out of the T-CON board, is there an ERROR pin on the T-CON board?

Re: Sony kdl-32bx320 not powering on

I looked in the panel sheet again, and there are only 4 pins that have other functions (other then ground / 12v / and LVDS) between the tcon and main board.

                  The 4 other pins are
                  9 LVDS Select ‘H' =JEIDA , ‘L' or NC = VESA
                  10 OPC_Enable ‘H' = Enable , ‘L' = Disable
27 OPC OUT OPC output (From LCM)
28 Ext VBR-B External VBR (From System)

Here is a description of the function of the last 3
                  1) When OPC Enable is “L", OPC Output = System Dimming.
                  2) OPC Output( PWM Signal) is synchronized with V-Sync Freq. of System in T-Con Board.
                  3) Regardless of OPC, System should always give dimming Signal (EXTVBR-B) to T-con.

So based on that i dont think any of these communicate a status to the main board. There is a LCD Test connection between the main board and the thin boards around the LCD (i never remember the technical term for those).

Its also possible that by monitoring the the voltage or curent of one of the other wires that a status for the Tcon could be predicted by the main board, but I think thats unlikely, and this appears to be a very basic dumb set.

Still curious about the AC OffDet to learn more.

I put in a new main board ($40), and everything worked great. I did have to change it from Store Display mode to home mode, so I guess we know where some of the used boards on ebay are comming from

Listing it on CL, need to update my forum sig as well.
