    LG plasma 60PS60

    hey need some help,

i have a LG 60PS60 plasma that is a few years old. after about a year (just out of warranty) the bottom half of the picture had horizontal lines going through it. at that time i read somewhere that there were "clips" that LG was installing to fix the problem. but then the problem went away for a year or so and i didn't do anything but now it's back.
i cannot find the site where i got this info and am wondering if anybody knows anything about it. i am not paying $300 or more to have a technician come look at it.
so i would really appreciate anyone with some knowledge that can help.

More than likely the clips were used to hold the Y-buffer drive FFCs down. I have seen similar issues with other plasma displays when the connectors are loose. Simply removing them and re-inserting them will likely permanently solve the problem. If you post pictures, I can help you locate the position of the Y-buffers or FFCs.

thanks Tom, i will do the pictures soon. this is from a thread on a different site about the same problem.

The Sears repair guy came today and took care of the problem. He had the six clips and the picture is back to normal now. It's a very simple fix and involves installed six small plastic retaining clips that probably cost less than $1 to manufacture. The tech that came out said that when this issue first started happening LG didn't know what the problem was and they were replacing the entire panel on the TV! Ouch! They must have lost a lot of money doing that. They eventually figured out that all they needed to do was install these retaining clips.

The tech gave me a detailed explanation of why this problem happens. It's not because LG did a bad job of assembling the TV at the factory. What causes the problem is the circuit board that the six connectors plug into vibrates when power goes through it, so over time the vibration of the board causes the plugs to slightly loosen and lose their connection, and this causes the darkening effect.

The reason the bottom half of the screen gets the darkening effect and not the upper half is the bottom three connectors get the most intense vibration from the circuit board because the power components are towards the bottom of the circuit board. The bottom three connectors correlate to the lower 50% of the screen so when those bottom three plugs get loose and lose their connections then half the screen goes dark.

The reason why people have this problem occur at such different times is the more you watch the TV the faster the problem occurs. The more you watch then the more the connections are then subject to vibration which causes the loosening of the plugs. I only use the TV like 10-15 hrs a week and it took a year for my connections to get loose. Someone that has the TV on 12 hrs a day will have the problem occur a lot sooner.

This was a design flaw but the good news is that the repair will fix the problem permanently. The clips they put on the plugs will keep the connection in place and now no amount of vibration will loosen them. So this will never happen again.

this is the part number for the clips. they cost a couple of dollars each and if i could get a picture of how they are installed i would do myself.

they fit right inside and overtop of the existing connections, there is only one way to put them in, just line them up and push em on till it clicks.

yeah I don't think you will be able to mess it up, but I guess a note that sometimes you gotta push them really quite hard to get em to lock all the way in.

Are these on the Y-scan (Y-buffer) connectors or Y-common (Z-sustain) connectors?

                          from another thread:

There are six connectors up the left side of the TV. He came and had six little comb like clips that just interlocked with those six connectors. It was kinda like interlocking two combs together..Took all of 2 minutes

went in super easy and would be almost impossible to mess up.

you are correct. my 12 year old daughter was with me and asked why it took me so long to try and fix it because it was so easy and cheap.

                                thanks for your help
