    Philips Lc4.31EA Strange Backlight Characteristics

Got this to fix for a friend. When I turned on the TV the backlight came on for a split second then shut down. I shone a torch on the screen and was able to see the static and channel change numbers, so I knew it was inverter/backlight problem.

Tested the PSU / caps / rails / B+ and all check out good.. The transformers, fuses and other bits on the inverter board check out good too... I was just gonna bin it but the curiosity got the better of me, cos I thought the backlight looked odd when it did come on... I opened up the LCD Panel and found the backlights and observed the following.

Half of all the bulbs turn on for a split second, hold the above lighting, and then immediately shut off... What the hell is happening????

The alternate inverter, slave most likely, is not working. Budm says they are used in push-pull config. I do not know much about the master/slave inverters (never had to fix one, it's on the wish list), but if that is the case, then only one side will get the ac excitation it needs, so only about half a bulb will light, individual bulb characteristics make it vary slightly of course.

I hear what you're saying tom, but I would have thought that if that was the case then for the positive period of the A/C cycle the light bulbs would be fully lit, and then fully UN-lit for the negative period of the AC cycle ..?

That is why I think it's more likely that both sides are driven independently (not necessarily in phase) and both need to be energised to get the bulb to work completely -- but as I said, I have no experience with these. I have seen them in TVs, but never done a repair on one.

Just think of it as a full bridge drive circuit, only half of the bridge is working so the output will not be at full voltage on each half of the cycle. Lets say that the power supply is 10v, in bridge mode, the load will see positive swing of 10v and negative swing of 10v, total will be 20v Peak-to-peak.

I might swap the dual NPN PNP MOSFET chips and see if the other half of the bulb lights up..

The two chips seem to measure differently, think an internal diode may be blown in one. I'm gonna pull them off the board and check them fully later.

Just for anybody else following the thread... I got a new inverter board from the UK for this one for 16.99 STR, and it sorted out the problem..

                Philips TV Backlight Repair
                by chestercc
So i'm trying to replace the LED's in a Philips TV. It's 42" with a 715g7262-p01-000-0010 backlight driver board based around an O2 Micro OZ9902CGN.

My issue is when I replace all the LED's on one board with the new 3V 300ma ones they immediately burn out when the set is powered again. I previously tried the same thing with 6V LED's and the backlight flickered for a bit but wouldn't start.

The original LED's which I removed which are still working start to melt and burn when given more than 3V on DCPS so I know they shouldn't be higher voltage ones.

                ...

Trying to control Philips backlight manually with PWM — brightness increases with frequency...?
                by ohren
I raised the question of whether PWM on the power board "dim" pin would be a reasonable assumption for controlling the backlight of a Philips TV (55put6101/12): https://www.badcaps.net/forum/troubl...d-tv-backlight. I didn't receive any insights there so I went ahead and tried it.

                The setup is basically:

                Rpi3 hardware PWM → 220 Ohm → NPN transistor → dim pin

Transistor is switching the 3.5 V supply on the power board....

Philips 55PUS6804/12 turn on & off (probably backlight issue)
                by ovrax
                Hello everyone,

First of all, please excuse me as I'm quite new to this field.

I have a Philips 55PUS6804/12 TV. It turns on and off instantly (backlight flash). I personally think it's a backlight issue (faulty LEDs). Could you help me confirm my diagnosis?

I've checked and the T-CON seems to be fine. I disconnected one ribbon cable at a time at the bottom, but the problem persists.
The Ambilight works perfectly and stays on.

                No sounds.

                Thanks in advance.

this tv is throwing me for a loop. do samsung tvs no longer have the backlight self test feature built into the power supply?
i tested the backlight with my LED tester and it lights up both strips. one of them reads 100v and the other reads 63.7v.
unplugged mainboard from power supply but left backlight plugged in, and then plugged psu wall power in. expected to see backlights light up but see nothing.
according to how ive diagnosed in the past, this would almost always be a bad power supply. replacement power supply was cheap like 20$ from ebay. but still i get not even...

philips 55pft5500/12 Backlight issue. What am I doing wrong?
                by DoOm86
TV philips 55'' no backlight (image ok).
I tested the backlight with my led tester from the unplugged connector cable and it lights up. I had voltages at the motherboard connector, but anyway I order a new psu. Same problem, same voltages. Disassembled the TV and checked every strip with my led tester, they all light up, same voltage for every pair of strip (they go two by two).
                What am I missing?

And something else I don't understand. I checked and I have 3v Leds, 10 per strips. Why every pair of strip (so 20 Led) take about 32v when powered up with my led tester 🤔
